Richard Gere's slick 1980 thriller American Gigolo is set for small-screen remake at Showtime

It was one of the slickest movies of the 1980s.

And now the Richard Gere thriller American Gigolo - about a handsome male escort who goes on the run after being accused of murder - will be remade for the small screen.

Showtime will be developing the project in collaboration with Paramount, Deadline revealed on Wednesday.

A classic: American Gigolo starring Richard Gere and Lauren Hutton will be remade by Showtime, Deadline revealed on Wednesday

Touching plot: The slick 1980 movie was about a handsome male escort who goes on the run after being accused of murder

Neil LaBute is writing the script and Jerry Bruckheimer, 73, as producer and Paul Schrader, who directed and wrote the original, is attached as an executive consultant.

The remake is set in the present day.

American Gigolo helped make Gere a sex symbol as he not only romanced a beautiful politician's wife, played by model Lauren Hutton, but he also showed off his toned body during workout and sex scenes.

A team: Neil LaBute is writing the script and Jerry Bruckheimer as producer and Paul Schrader, who directed and wrote the original, is attached as an executive consultant

Movie magic: The thriller turned Hutton from a model to a film star

After that he starred in the massive 1982 hit An Officer And A Gentleman.

Gere, 67, still works consistently today with his last hit being 2015's The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.

Hutton went on to the 1981 camp classic Zorro: The Gay Blade.

Today: Hutton is still modeling - here she is seen in September at a fashion event. And Gere makes movies consistently. He is pictured here in September at the premiere of his new film Norman: The Moderate Rise And Tragic Fall Of A New York Fixer

It is not known which actors will take the starring roles, but the movie will be most likely set in Los Angeles.

News of this remake comes on the heels of Showtime redoing Twin Peaks.

Paramount is also remaking their older films The Italian Job (for NBC), Shutter Island (for HBO), School of Rock (for Nickelodeon) and Jack Ryan (for Amazon).

Other remakes out there are Sneakers, Enemy of the State, Dynasty, War of the Worlds (MTV) and Magnum P.I.
