NFPA announces second annual NEC Challenge

Electrical professionals nationwide put their code knowledge to the test

August 6, 2014 -- The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) announced that its second annual NEC Challenge is firmly underway. The NEC Challenge is an interactive competition that invites electrical professionals across the country to put their code knowledge to the test. Last year’s inaugural Challenge was created in celebration of the release of the 2014 edition of the National Electrical Code® (NEC®).

As one of the world’s most widely used codes for the built environment, the NEC sets the standard for safe electrical installation and inspection to protect people and property from electrical hazards; it is adopted and used in all 50 states.

“Last year’s NEC Challenge was a great success, and served as a fun, interactive way to bring attention to many important elements of the code,” said Lorraine Carli, vice president of Outreach and Advocacy for NFPA. “Now that the electrical community is more familiar with the Challenge, we anticipate an even more heated competition with broader participation.”

The first of this year’s NEC Challenge was hosted at NJATC-NTI in Ann Arbor, Mich., July 26 to August 1. Upcoming challenges will be held at the following trade shows:

  • NECA/Chicago, Ill. – September 27-30, 2014
  • IEC/Baltimore, Md. – October 22-25, 2014

The winner of each challenge will receive an Apple iPad® and a copy of the 2014 NEC, and will go on to compete against one another in a live webisode championship consisting of three rounds of gameplay, including a head-to-head final round challenge between the top two contestants for the grand prize of $5,000. The first and second runners-up will receive $1,500 and $500, respectively.

The NEC Challenge is also available for gameplay online. The top five performers are listed in real-time on the website’s leaderboard, and will be awarded prizes on a weekly and monthly basis.
