La Polynésie française est un ensemble d’archipels dépendant de la France, situé dans l’Océan Pacifique, environ 6 000 km à l’est de l’Australie. La Polynésie française est une collectivité d’outre-mer, actuellement régie par la loi organique n° 2004-192 du 27 février 2004. Elle bénéficie d'une large autonomie politique.

French Polynesia is a French territory (French: territoire d'outre-mer, or DOM-TOM) with the particular designation of "overseas country" (French: pays d'outre-mer, or POM) in the southern Pacific Ocean. It has maritime borders with ► Kiribati, the ► Cook Islands and ► Pitcairn Island. It is made up of several groups of Polynesian islands, the most famous island being Tahiti in the Society Islands group, which is also the most populous island, and the seat of the capital of the territory (Papeete). Although not an integral part of its territory, ► Clipperton Island is administered from French Polynesia.

History maps
This section holds a short summary of the history of the area of present-day French Polynesia, illustrated with maps, including historical maps of former countries and empires that included present-day French Polynesia.
From 1595 Spanish and English discoverers explore the area that is now French Polynesia. In 1842 chiefs of the Marquesas Islands cede sovereignty to France; other islands are annexed until 1900 as the French Settlements in Oceania. In 1903 the settlements are united into French Ocania. French Oceania becomes a overseas territory in 1946 and receives internal self-government in 1956. It is then restyled Territory of French Polynesia. In 2004 French Polynesia is granted more autonomy and the status is changed into a French overseas country.
