Real estate heir Robert Durst is extradited to California for murder charge after he 'killed his best friend to keep her from talking about the disappearance of his first wife in 1982'

  • Robert Durst is facing a murder charge for killing Susan Berman
  • He's accused of murdering her in 2000 to keep her talking to prosecutors about the disappearance of his first wife in 1982
  • Durst has consistently maintained his innocence
  • Was arrested in March 2015 after finale of HBO mini-series The Jinx aired

New York real estate heir Robert Durst has made his long-awaited arrival in California to face charges of killing a friend 16 years ago, authorities said.

Durst arrived at the Los Angeles County jail Friday and is being held without bail ahead of his scheduled arraignment on Monday afternoon, district attorney's spokeswoman Jane Robison said.

He's expected to plead not guilty, TMZ reports.

Local prosecutors have been eager to bring Durst to California and try him in the killing of his friend Susan Berman in 2000.

His case rose to prominence last year after HBO's documentary series, The Jinx, which looked into the deaths of Durst's ex-wife, his neighbor Morris Black, and Berman.

He was arrested after the final episode aired in March 2015.

He was being held in New Orleans on federal weapons charges until he pleaded guilty in April. He had already waived extradition to California.

Durst is accused in California of killing Berman in 2000 to keep her from talking to prosecutors about the disappearance of Durst's first wife, Kathleen Durst, in 1982.

Durst's attorney, Dick DeGuerin, has said Durst is just as eager to come to Los Angeles County and prove his innocence.

'We've been begging to get to California since two days after he was arrested,' DeGuerin said in September.

Durst, already well-known in New York, became far more famous when HBO aired The Jinx.

The series cast serious suspicion on him for several alleged crimes, including the Berman killing.

Durst was acquitted of killing his neighbor Morris Black in Texas, saying it was self-defense.

Berman was shot in the back of the head at her home in Beverly Hills, a day before she was due to be questioned by police who had reopened an investigation into the 1982 disappearance of the tycoon's wife, Kathleen Durst, in New York.

Durst appeared to make an unwitting confession to a number of killings during filming of the acclaimed six-part HBO documentary The Jinx: The Life and Deaths of Robert Durst.

In the final episode Durst was heard muttering to himself, 'What the hell did I do? Killed them all, of course,' apparently unaware that a wireless microphone remained switched on while he used the bathroom.

It was not clear if Durst was sincerely confessing, but authorities in Los Angeles have said the documentary had played a role in their decision to seek the multimillionaire's arrest for Berman's murder.

Durst was arrested the morning the last of the documentary's six parts was aired in March 2015.

Durst was sentenced to seven years and one month in prison after pleading guilty to the New Orleans weapons charge.

He had been serving time in an Indiana federal prison since September.
