After years out of the spotlight, the X Factor winner's second album Back From The Edge, has debuted at the top of the charts since its release last week.

The record marks his first ever UK number one album, which the singer described as 'the ultimate sense of achievement.'

He said of his excitement: 'To have a body of work go to Number 1... it's the ultimate sense of achievement. Thank you so much to everyone who has bought it.'

James was set for a strong comeback after he debuted his single Say You Won't Let Go last month, which held the top spot on the UK Singles chart for three weeks.

Success story: After years out of the spotlight, the X Factor winner's second album Back From The Edge, has debuted at the top of the charts since its release last week

After winning the ITV reality show in 2012, the singer had a spectacular fall from grace when he was later dropped from Simon's record label Syco after a number of fallouts over lyrics and behaviour on Twitter.

James made headlines the year after his win when he appeared to make homophobic slurs at rapper Micky Worthless.

The controversial character wrote a rap about the star slamming him as a 'f*****g q***r' and urged him to 'shoot himself'.

Although he later apologised and admitted he was 'extremely disappointed in himself', the singer sparked outrage in the LGBT community, and became embroiled in further Twitter fights with the likes of Matt Lucas and Frankie Boyle.

Disbelief: He said of his excitement: 'To have a body of work go to Number 1... it's the ultimate sense of achievement. Thank you so much to everyone who has bought it'

He announced soon after that he was quitting the social media site, with his management taking over his page - before confirming he had parted ways with Syco in June 2014.

James has admitted previously he has grown up during his time away from the spotlight, explaining: 'I look back on the character that was then and I’m embarrassed about how I behaved and how negative my perspective was, and how I handled the pressure.

'I went from absolutely nothing to a lot of people judging me overnight and it was really tough for me.'

Arthur is only the second X Factor winner to score a number one with their second album after Leona Lewis, according to the Official Charts Company.
