Originally Alex Borstein - who is the voice actress of Lois Griffin on the animated TV series Family Guy - was meant to play the role of Lorelai Gilmore's chef but could not get out of her contract.
So they auditioned hundreds of would-be Sookies and finally cast a then-struggling actor Melissa McCarthy who is now, of course, a mega star.
The new mini-series will see the return of several supporting players from the original show which ran from 2000 until 2006.

'I'm feeling very lost these days,' she sighed. 'I have no job, I have no credit, I have no underwear.'
Mimicking Marlon Brando's iconic line from On the Waterfront she tried to make light of her situation and quoted the Hollywood legend: 'I coulda been a contender.'
Jess (Ventimiglia) raises his glass to the sulking stunner and says: 'You're still a contender.'

The four 90-minute episodes of the Netflix series Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life will premiere on November 25.
Originally Melissa said her absence was not her fault as she was not on the list of confirmed returning cast members for the show.
Creator Amy Sherman-Palladino explained to TVLine: 'She’s really f*****g busy!'
Missing Melissa: The award-winning actress thrilled fans when she announced she would be returning as her beloved character
'But the thing I have said is, "Look, if Melissa is available and has an afternoon free, I’ll write her a scene,"' Amy continued.
She added: 'Melissa was one of us. If she has a spare moment to run over — even if for just a cameo — we would be totally game. And if it’s a last-minute thing, I would write her in and we would figure it out. That’s the way we left it.'
But the Mike & Molly alum was then spotted on Twitter telling a fan that she hadn't been invited in the first place.
Melissa told the fan, who begged her to appear: 'Thanks for the invite, but sadly no one asked me or Sookie to come back to Stars Hollow. Wish them all the best!!'
