'I've been exhausted!': Ed Balls reveals his sex life is suffering after taking part in Strictly Come Dancing

He was once one of the most prominent politicians in Britain, holding a host of senior ministerial posts in the Labour Party.

But Ed Balls, 49, has revealed that his most tiring task to date has been competing on Strictly Come Dancing, which has incidentally had a detrimental effect on his sex life.

Speaking to The Mirror about whether exercise had helped him romantically with wife Yvette Cooper, he admitted that he was 'exhausted' by the time he got home.

Ready for bed: Ed Balls, 49, has revealed that his most tiring task to date has been competing on Strictly Come Dancing, which has incidentally had a detrimental effect on his sex life

He explained: 'To be honest, I’ve been exhausted for about two months. It would be fair to say it’s very tiring, this Strictly.

'You do get home in the evenings and you’re just exhausted.'

The former Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer also compared the exertion to another sport, as he confessed: 'It’s like running a marathon every day.'

Hard taskmaster: Ed has been paired with Katya Jones and compared the physical feats of dancing every weekend with 'running a marathon'

Ed, who has been married to Labour MP Yvette, 47, since 1998, recently revealed that his wife was the one who pushed him to take part in the BBC series in the hope it would help him lose weight.

Speaking on This Morning, the star - who has been partnered with Katya Jones - confessed he was already seeing results but was determined to keep going.

Ed explained: 'She thinks there’s at least another stone-and-a-half to go. So far, it’s probably about a stone, which for six weeks isn’t bad.

'I’m also toning up and changing shape. You can just feel it.'

He continued: 'It’s the most fabulous show. When I was asked in the spring I thought I was going to say no.

'Yvette said "how can you possibly say no to learning to dance?"'

Ed will have the chance to burn even more calories off this week, as he will be tackling the super-speedy quickstep on Saturday's show.
