International organizations

Atlas of international organizations An international organization, or more formally intergovernmentalorganization (IGO), is an organization whose members are sovereign states or other IGOs (like the European Union and the WTO). Such organizations function according to the principles of intergovernmentalism, which means that unanimity is required. The European Union is however an exception to this rule in some areas. Une organisation internationale (OI) est une organisation qui regroupe des personnes morales afin de coordonner des actions touchant plusieurs pays. Ces organisations prennent une importance particulière suite à l'essor de la mondialisation, par exemple en apportant un cadre juridique à certaines activités concernant l'ensemble du monde ou de vastes zones de celui-ci. Existen dos tipos principales de organizaciones internacionales (conocidos también como organismos internacionales), las organizaciones intergubernamentales(IGOs), son aquellos miembros que son estados soberanos u otras organizaciones intergubernamentales (como la Unión Europea y el WTO), y organizaciones no gubernamentales (ONGs), que son organizaciones privadas.

Every entry has an introduction section in English. If other languages are native and/or official in an entity, introductions in other languages are added in separate sections. The same goes for the texts in the history sections. Historical maps are included in the continent, country and dependency entries. The status of various entities is disputed. The maps of former countries that are more or less continued by a present-day country or had a territory included in only one or two countries are included in the atlas of the present-day country. For example the Ottoman Empire can be found in the Atlas of Turkey.
