He was left debilitated after suffering a horrific stroke on a flight in May 2014.

But Chris Tarrant seemed to have put the trauma behind him as he stepped out looking healthy and happy with his longterm partner Jane Bird on Monday night.

The former Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? host, 70, beamed as he put an arm around his girlfriend as they arrived at The One Shows studio in London.

Fit as a fiddle! Chris Tarrant, 70, seemed to have put the trauma of his stroke in 2014 behind him as he stepped out looking healthy with his long-term partner Jane Bird on Monday night

The presenter - who was promoting his new show Chris Tarrant: Extreme Railways - wrapped up against the November chill in a blue padded jacket, which he pulled on over a pinstripe navy suit.

With his tie undone and slung around his neck, the legendary broadcaster seemed relaxed and in good spirits.

Jane looked a tad more dressed up, as she stepped out in a metallic jacquard dress, worn with black peep-toes.

Ever the patient partner, she helpfully offered to take a photo of an eager fan waiting outside the studios with Chris.

Chris has been keeping a relatively low profile since disaster struck on a plane in 2014.

He desperately tried to phone his girlfriend to say goodbye after suffering a stroke flying at 39,000ft.

The Reading-born presenter became convinced he was going to die after suddenly losing the use of his arms and legs on a flight from Thailand to London.

He said he battled the symptoms for 11 traumatic hours but didn't want to tell the cabin crew as he was afraid they would say there was nothing they could do.

Instead, he kept calling Jane Bird to tell her he loved her. He said: 'I got very panicky. I was very alone up there, thinking, “I could die”.

'I wasn't sure if I was going to fade away completely on my own. I am incredibly lucky to be alive because one in three people who have strokes don't make it. It has made me appreciate my life so much more.'

Tarrant, then 67, had travelled to Thailand to film the second series of his Extreme Railways documentaries and said the symptoms started at the airport in Bangkok as he waited for his return flight.

He was rushed to Charing Cross Hospital in London where doctors did emergency surgery to remove a blood clot from his right leg - which Chris credits for keeping him out of a wheelchair.

Two years after the incident, Chris revealed he takes medication and is 'fit as a fiddle'  now - and taking things easy to make the most of life.

He told The Mirror: 'I used to work like a dog for years, but I don't work nearly as hard as I used to. Now I just think, "Sod that".

'I turn a lot of stuff down and spend more time travelling with my missus and my kids, going on holiday.”

Chris is now making time for his children - Helen, 38, and Jennifer, 35, from his 11-year marriage to Sheila

Chris also relishes time with his children – Helen, 38, and Jennifer, 35, from his 11-year marriage to Sheila, Sammy, 28, and Toby, 24, from his marriage to Ingrid and Dexter, 35, and Fia, 31, Ingrid's kids from a previous relationship.
