So it seemed only appropriate Hugh Grant's Four Weddings And A Funeral lover Andie MacDowell was the person to hand his supporting actor gong at the Hollywood Film Awards on Sunday.

The Southern belle handed over the prize to the grinning Englishman for his turn opposite Meryl Streep in Florence Foster Jenkins, where he played the famed heiress and socialite's husband St. Clair Bayfield.

The fading hunk was quick to compliment his on-screen lover as he drunk up the acclaim.

Self-effacing Hugh, 56, said: ' I'm just depressed at how much better preserved you are than I am after 22 years. Do you use any special creams or anything like that?

'It's amazing. You're still a southern peach and I am, according to Twitter, a scrotum.'

The performer, who was famously accused of being wooden by shock interviewer Dennis Pennis, also said he was astounded to actually get recognised for his acting, saying his award would receive pride of place in his spacious residence.

He said: 'I almost never get a prize and I'm so pleased with this one. It will not be in my loo or used as a doorstep.'

Hugh, whose ancestry has been described as a 'colourful Anglo-Scottish tapestry of warriors, empire-builders and aristocracy' by genealogist Antony Adolph, has starred in an astounding 27 films since he shot to fame as bumbling Charles in Four Weddings in 1994.

And while he has starred in a mixture of hits and misses since then, by many he will forever be remembered for being punched out by his fiancee at the alter before finally pledging his love to Andie's character Carrie in the gentle Richard Curtis romantic comedy.
