BBC finds that smart motorway cameras catch 1,000 speeding motorists a week

A BBC One Show investigation found that 52,516 speeding fines had been handed out on 11 sections of smart motorway last year. Just 2,023 were issued on the same roads five year ago.

Philip Hammond may reveal the changes, which could lead to 300,000 drivers paying more tax, in the Autumn Statement. Motorists who use low-emission vehicles would be the worst hit.
