Matchy-matchy! As Nina Dobrev pairs a lilac dress with lavender eyeshadow for the MTV EMAs, FEMAIL reveals how to make PURPLE lids work for you

If you thought the purple eyeshadow trend we saw during Fashion Week back in September was just a flash in the pan, think again.

Nina Dobrev wore a lavender hue on her eyelids for last night's MTV European Music Awards in Rotterdam, Netherlands.

The color was a perfect match with her pale purple Elie Saab gown.

Make-up artist Adam Breuchaud gave the 27-year-old Vampire Diaries actress the stunning purple smoky eye.

He seamlessly blended multiple shades of violet to make Nina's brown eyes pop. We love how he first used a matte, eggplant color to create the elongated shape of the eye and then used a shimmery shadow on top to give it dimension and glamour.

Also note how he brought the shades under the lower lashline all the way to the inner corners to create a full circle of purple.

Nina's bold purple eye, however, comes after we saw a plethora of similar hues both on and off the runways during New York Fashion Week. 

Unsurprisingly, given her penchant for setting trends, the first time we spotted the shade was on Solange Knowles, 30. The singer wore highly pigmented swaths of purple across her eyelids while sitting front row at the Creatures of Comfort show.

She kept the rest of her face bare, keeping the focus on her eyes. Thick, groomed brows helped intensify and anchor the purple hue, which went from her upper lashline to her brow bone.

Then, for the Tracy Reese presentation, which took place outside in a garden, models were given a more translucent take on the purple trend.

Make-up artist Luis Casco applied Mary Kay Mineral Eye Color in Iris and Precious Pink to models' eyelids, placing the pink in the center of the lid and winging out the purple shadow past the outer corners of the eyes, toward the temples. He finished by applying several coats of Mary Kay Lash Intensity Mascara.

'We didn't want to do any eyeliner because we wanted to keep a really fresh look to the eye,' he said. 'Both Tracy and I felt that just using the mascara and being able to see through it was enough of a pop to the eye.

'To me, that's sometimes the difference between a fresh summer-y look and a more dressed up look. So maybe if she was going out for the evening, you could add eyeliner, but since we're going to be in a garden and it's more of a daytime look, I wanted to not use eyeliner.'

Purple shadow popped up again at the Jeremy Scott runway show. Make-up artist Kabuki gave created what he calls an ''80s-inspired, smoky eye done in color.'

He used a black pencil as a base around the lash line and layered a sheer, shimmery lilac shadow over top (MAC Eyeshadow in Beautiful Iris). Several coats of purple mascara completed the color treatment. 

'It's not an aggressive look,' he said. 'It's more of a feathered out, ombre color. Even though there's a lot of color to it, there's a sheerness because it's shadow, so it's not heavy pigment.'

To soften up the look further, Kabuki said he also toned down the models' eyebrows by brushing a peach-toned concealer through them with a clean mascara brush.
