Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga lead the MTV EMA winners with two apiece, but snubbed Beyonce and Adele surprisingly leave empty handed

They may have each been nominated for four gongs at the MTV EMAs but Adele and Beyonce were left empty handed at Sunday night's 2016 ceremony.

Instead, Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga, aDJ Martin Garrix and indie band Twenty One Pilots were the main winners, each scooping two awards.

However none of the big winners were on hand to accept their awards on the night, with Gaga making a brief pre-recorded speech from Tokyo for her Best Female Act and Best Look prizes and Twenty One Pilots currently on tour.

Twenty One Pilots, comprised of Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun, swiped Best Alternative Act and Best Live Artist at the Rotterdam show where many of the A-listed nominees were absent.

Beyoncé was up for Best Video for her single Formation along with Best Female, Best Live and Best Local Act (US) but came away with nothing.

Snub: Adele, pictured at the Brit Awards earlier this year, received  four nominations but came away with no awards

Nothing for Beyonce: The singer, pictured on stage at the 50th annual CMA Awards  last week also emerged empty handed

Adele lost out to Justin in the Best Song category, while she was pipped to the post for Best UK and Ireland act by Little Mix who beat out stiff competition from Zayn (Malik), Coldplay and Years And Years.

'WHAAAAT! We won?!' the band tweeted. 'We won an #MTVEMA on #GetWeird's anniversary! ALL because of you... Love you guys to the MOON & Back the girls x'

The gong for Best Video went to The Weeknd for Starboy ft Daft Punk, while Shawn Mendes nabbed Best Male Artist, collecting the gong from Jordan Dunne and dedicating his prize to his 'incredible fans worldwide.'

Green Day were in for a special treat as they won the Global Icon Award, ending the show with a special performance of American Idiot.

'I’ve got to say one thing, it's really nice to be in Europe right now,' said the lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong, collecting the gong from British actor Idris Elba.
