'Knowing when to speak up or shut up': Jon Bon Jovi reveals the secrets to his 27-year marriage with high school sweetheart Dorothea Hurley... and insists their relationship is 'normal' despite his rock star status

Jon Bon Jovi, 54, is one of few rock greats still touring and flourishing 30-years on in his career.

But his long-lasting career isn't the only thing some people consider a rarity in his life, with his marriage to high school sweetheart, Dorothea Hurley, still going strong, despite his rock 'n' roll lifestyle and huge successes.

Speaking to Sunday Night in an interview which aired Sunday, the musician revealed the secret to his marital bliss, 27-years on.

'Knowing when to speak up or shut up': Jon Bon Jovi revealed mutual respect was at the heart of his 27-year union with high school sweetheart, Dorothea Hurley, as he spoke about his long-lasting marriage on Sunday Night

Bon Jovi and Hurley eloped in April 1989, marrying in a Las Vegas wedding while the singer was on a short break from touring - with the nuptials so last minute, it's understood they didn't even have rings for the ceremony.

But the relationship has stood the test of time, with the frontman proudly claiming he 'got it right the first time.'

Describing the secret to their success as a couple, the singer listed: 'It's, you know, mutual respect. It starts with that, right?... and listening.'

'And knowing when to speak up or shut up,' he continued.

While many in Hollywood say a long-lasting marriage is hard to come by, the same can be said for musicians in 'the rock world', but Bon Jovi says he hates the term, clarifying that marriage is hard in any work, in any world.

'Well, what the f*** does that mean? It doesn't mean anything. It's in a tough world. It's not easy,' he told Sunday Night of marriage.

In a recent interview with People magazine, the singer added on the topic: 'Somehow I became the poster boy for a long married rock star... But I’ll accept the mantle because I’m so happy'.

Bon Jovi gushed to the publication about his wife, describing her as the 'glue' that keeps their family together.

'I became the poster boy for a long married rock star': In a recent interview with People magazine the rocker sais he's happy to take the title, as he gushed about his wonderful wife

'I’m the crazy visionary with all kinds of things flying, and the seams are all splitting. She’s the one following me with the glue and the thread and needle, keeping it all together.'

While in 2010, he told Men's Health magazine he's a 'family man' with no interest in one night stands or groupies.

'[Dorothea] has been in it the whole game. She understands what it means. It's my life, and it is what it is. But, really, I don't look at this week's hot starlet and think about trading in or trading up.

'You're never going to read that story about me': The now 54-year-old claims Dorothea is the 'glue' to their family, and told Men's Health in 2010 he was never interested in one night stand or a mistress

'I don't have a mistress on the side or another family across town. You're never going to read that story about me,' he added.

The loved-up pair also raised four children during the time their father led one of the world's most successful rock bands.

Their children are now all grown up: Stephanie, 23; Jesse James Louis, 21; Jacob Hurley, 14; and Romeo Jon, 12.

Stephanie made headlines in 2012, when she was rushed to the hospital from her college dorm room due to a heroin overdose.

However, a year on and the young adult appeared to have fully recovered, happy and healthy, according to reports.
