Pregnant mother, 22, rushed to hospital after her pet dog Lola alerted her to the fact she was having a miscarriage - saving baby Oliver's life

A pregnant woman's unborn child was saved after her pet dog alerted her to the fact she was suffering a miscarriage in the middle of the night.

Jade Ambrose, now 23, from Leeds, was 33 weeks pregnant and asleep when she was awoken by Lola who started barking.

It was only then that she realised she was losing blood and her waters had broken - two common signs of a miscarriage.

She was rushed to hospital where doctors fought to save her unborn child's life.

And just eight weeks later, in August, she gave birth by Caeserean section to her little boy called Oliver, now 11 weeks.

She believes her close relationship with the Staffordshire Bull Terrier cross is the only reason he is alive today.

Jade Ambrose was 33 weeks pregnant and asleep when she was awoken by her pet dog Lola. She was rushed to hospital after she saw she was bleeding heavily and doctors prevented her miscarrying. Eight weeks later, she gave birth to Oliver (pictured with partner Paul Stacey, 29)

She said: 'At first we didn't realise what was going on when Lola woke us and thought she must have been barking at something outside, but then we realised she was barking at me.

'It was only when I got up to go to the loo that I realised I was losing blood.

'Doctors told me that if I had not gone to hospital when I did I would have had to go ahead with the delivery that night, and who knows what would have happened.

'There might have been all sorts of complications, and certainly with Oliver beginning his life in an incubator.

'If Lola had not have woken me I don't know what would have happened because I hadn't been in any pain at all. I'd have just slept through and it could have been devastating.

'I don't know whether Lola detected a problem with the heartbeat or it was just doggy intuition - but whatever it was, we will be eternally grateful to her.'

It was only when Lola began to bark that the nursery nurse, from Leeds, realised she was losing blood and that her waters had broken

The nursery nurse adopted Lola when she was 20 weeks pregnant - just after she discovered she was expecting.

Puppies usually go to their new owners after eight weeks, but Lola's mother was starting to turn on her offspring, meaning she needed to be homed quickly.

Miss Ambrose became very close to Lola and nurtured her, which she says allowed them get in tune with each other.

She said the dog would often get close to her bump, 'as if she knew there was somebody else in there'.

The family say the dog used to lick Miss Ambrose's stomach whenever she saw the baby inside kicking.

But last year, while she was asleep, Lola began to bark as she detected something was wrong. Miss Ambrose was immediately rushed to hospital by her partner Paul Stacey, 29.

The family said the Staffordshire Bull Terrier cross would often get close to her bump, 'as if she knew there was somebody else in there'. They also claim the dog used to lick Miss Ambrose's stomach whenever she saw the baby inside kicking

Doctors were able to stop the miscarriage and keep Oliver in the womb for another eight weeks.

They were forced to perform a Caeserean in August - and he was delivered five days later than his expected due date.

The family hope the pair can develop a close relationship, similar to the one they had while Oliver was inside the womb.

Miss Ambrose said: 'I can see a future where they will have lots of fun-packed days together, with them playing together in the garden.

'We will let Oliver know what Lola did for him, because Lola is amazing.'

Lola and Miss Ambrose have since been awarded an exclusive £50 voucher from their local Pet Hut pet shop after entering a competition to find a pet hero on Facebook.

She added: 'I am so delighted that Lola has won, she thoroughly deserves it.. We will treat her to something special with her winnings.'
