Sweet escape: Green Day rockers (l-r) Tré Cool, Billie Joe Armstrong and Mike Dirnt expressed their joy at being away from the 'horrendous' US presidential election while attending the MTV EMAs at Rotterdam's Ahoy Arena on Sunday night
Flanked by his bandmates Mike Dirnt and Tré Cool, the star was applauded and cheered by the audience, seemingly in agreement with his statement.
While the rocker's brief mention of the election failed to single out either of the presidential candidates, the band's closing performance certainly did.
As they took to the stage to perform their 2004 protest anthem American Idiot - which slams former President George W. Bush - the they altered their lyrics to contain the words 'Trump America'.
Speaking out: Frontman Billie made the comments on the band's behalf as they accepted the Global Icon Award from Idris Elba, right

Billie's comments came a day after music magazine the NME released an interview, in which he blamed Donald Trump's political rise on 'uneducated white working-class people'.
He said: 'There’s this white nationalism that’s been brewing under the radar for a long time. But now [Trump’s] been able to cause people to lash out and blame minorities and it’s really confusing. I mean, blatant misogyny going on at the same time.'
'I’ve got family members from Oklahoma that are big Trump supporters,' he continued. 'And there’s no clear answer on why they’re supporting him because he doesn’t even have any policies.
Cutting words: In an interview with the NME, Billie blamed Donald's political rise on 'uneducated white working-class people'
Family: He also revealed that many members of his family were voting for the Republican
'How can you have an opinion about who you want for the Leader of the Free World when the guy running doesn’t have answers to any questions?'
US citizens will head to the polls on Tuesday, with Donald Trump representing the Republican party and Hillary Clinton on the Democrat ticket.
The once-cordial pair have traded a stream of barbs, prompting the current presidential election cycle to be dubbed one of the most contentious yet.
No Trump: Billie is one of a number of celebrities who have spoken out against Donald
Soaring to new heights: Tré was seen climbing rigging during the band's appearance
Campaign trail: The former Apprentice star was seen making a campaign stop at Minnesota's Minneapolis International Airport on Sunday
