Release date: The latest teaser has heightened excitement for the movie ahead of its cinema release in March next year

The trailer, which was released last month, has already left fans wanting more after movie makers Marvel moved away from their usual light-hearted approach.

Set to the bleak soundtrack of Johnny Cash's Hurt coupled with extreme close-ups of Hugh's scarred face, the trailer depicts Wolverine struggling to overcome severe injuries while taking refuge from civilisation in a desert hideaway with Professor Xavier.

His world is turned upside down, however, when a young girl who appears to be a female clone of Wolverine, is introduced into the picture.

Frail: The trailer depicts Hugh's character struggling to overcome severe injuries while taking refuge from civilisation in a desert hideaway with Professor Xavier, played by Patrick Stewart

Moving on: The actor is leaving the comic book franchise after making his debut in 2000 in X-Men

After announcing that this would be his last Wolverine film, Hugh told Entertainment Tonight why he felt it was the right time to stop.

'It was a gut feeling,' he said. 'I don't know how many more egg white omelettes I can eat.'

The jokes were a reference to the strict diet he underwent to achieve his ripped physique for the films.
