'Here's to 3 magic years of friendship': Lorde pays tribute to best friend Taylor Swift after singer organises 'the best birthday party' in New York with guests including Karlie Kloss

Lorde marked her 20th birthday in a trendy New York restaurant on Monday, surrounded by family and friends.

And following the celebrations, the New Zealand-born singer took to social media to thank the party planner - her best friend Taylor Swift.

Sharing a series of photos from the night with fans on Instagram, the birthday girl pays tribute to the Shake It Off hitmaker, saying: 'Here's to our 3 magic years of best friendship and more moments like this'.

Another shot shows Lorde is seen sipping her drink as she's kissed on the cheek by both Taylor and Victoria's Secret model Karlie Kloss, the Royals singer penned an emotional tribute to her pals.

'Had the best birthday party I've ever had tonight surrounded by my NYC family. All organised by Tay who is as she says "a mom with no kids". 

'I am ur (sic) kid and u (sic) love me so hard I could burst. 

'Here's to our 3 magic years of best friendship and more moments like this squished between angels,' she wrote.

Posting a video of a chocolate cake being brought to the table, the 20-year-old is seen grinning broadly as the large party sings Happy Birthday in unison, using Ella instead of Lorde in the song.

The singer teased fans that she had made a wish when blowing out the candles but didn't elaborate further.

Earlier in the day, Lorde received an adoring birthday wish from her BFF Taylor Swift, who took the opportunity to recall their first meeting years ago.  

'Thank you for the music you make, the advice you give, the thoughts you provoke, and the way you've made my life more beautiful since the first day we met up in New York and ate burgers on a park bench and got attacked by squirrels,' the 26-year-old shared via Instagram on Tuesday.

'I. Love. You. So. Much. Ella. (sic)' Taylor concluded her post.

The birthday dedication was accompanied by a photo of a watercolour card, which appeared to be homemade by the Blank Space hitmaker herself.

Lorde, who was born in New Zealand, has spent a great deal of time in the US in recent months, where she is believed to be working on new music.

And on Monday, the singer-songwriter announced new details on the follow up album to Pure Heroine.

Reflecting on her teenage years and early career in a Facebook post addressed to her fans, the Royals hitmaker shared details of her upcoming record.

She promises includes the 'best' lyrics she's ever written, as she recalled the past 'colossal' year that inspired the songs on the new album.

'I want nothing more than to spill my guts RIGHT NOW about the whole thing.'

The ARIA winner went on to tell her fans to 'hold on' while she continues to work on the record to 'make it as good as it can be'.

Giving away no details about the exact release date, the singer did mention: 'The big day is not tomorrow, or even next month realistically, but soon. I know you understand.'

And as the brunette star concluded her post, the brunette star was no longer a teenager, with the clock striking midnight on her 20th birthday.

'Oh my god it's midnight now!!! I'm 20 f***!!!!!' she wrote enthusiastically.

'What I'm trying to say is: this is a special birthday. The party is about to start. I am about to show you the new world.'
