Anti-Trump protests turn violent in Oakland, while Cher and Madonna attend NYC march

Cher and Madonna were among thousands of furious protesters stomping toward Trump Tower in New York City tonight to protest Donald Trump's shock election as president. Cher told one protester 'We have to fight' - and a fight certainly looked on the cards as the masses marched, holding aloft effigies, including Trump hanging from a noose, and placards reading 'Impeach White Supremacy.' That was just one of at least seven major protests against the President-elect this evening, as cities ground to a halt to accommodate the livid masses. In Chicago, thousands marched through the streets of the Loop, blocking traffic and surrounding cars. Philadelphia, which had seen Nazi-related anti-Trump graffiti sprayed across its shop fronts last night, was the subject of a 1,000-strong march. Boston Common saw a small gathering growing into a crowd of thousands who chanted 'F**k Donald Trump' and 'Our President is a Nazi.' Half the student body of Berkeley High School, California - some 1,500 people - walked out of classes after first period. Portland, Oregon protesters numbering around 2,000 marched into the evening. And outside The White House, hundreds of protesters gathered for the second night running before walking on to the new Trump International Hotel.

Obama congratulates Trump on victory as he says country MUST unite behind new president

President Obama said he was rooting for the new president and said the entire American people should. He spoke at the White House where President-elect Trump is expected tomorrow. The Rose Garden address was his first public comment on the dramatic defeat of the Democratic candidate he had thrown huge time and energy into campaigning for. 'This is an intramural scrimmage. We're not Democrats first. We're not Republicans first. We're Americans first. We're patriots first,' he said. After he spoke some of his staff openly wept at the result, one saying of the day: 'I'm so sad'. Obama's call for calm came alongside similar statements from both Clinton and Trump. All three combined in a concerted effort to try and bring the nation together after a fractious and bitter election battle.

Seattle police said on Twitter on Wednesday night that they were investigating a report of a shooting with 'multiple victims' not far from the scene of demonstrations.

Could Barack Obama's last act as president be pardoning Hillary Clinton?

Even though Hillary Clinton (left) hasn't been charged with a crime, the White House is not ruling out the possibility of her receiving a last-minute pardon from President Obama (right). On Wednesday, during press secretary Josh Earnest's briefing, he was asked whether the president had considered using his executive power in favor of the former secretary of state. 'The president has offered clemency to a substantial number of Americans who were previously serving time in federal prisons,' Earnest said.

Elite supporting Clinton will lead to Ordinary Americans triggering Millennial Armageddon

PIERS MORGAN: 'The new President-elect of the United States of America is Donald J. Trump.' Those, I can say with some certainty, were the words that only Donald himself and me ever thought he might eventually be saying when he first announced he was running last year to global mockery and scorn. Trump won because he challenged all political convention and every single facet of the establishment. I was struck by the sheer scale of cocky complacency which enveloped the Hillary Clinton camp in the past few weeks as Election Day approached. It smacked of precisely the same 'there's no way we can possibly lose to these 'ignorant, racist, sexist Neanderthals' establishment mentality that provoked Britain into Brexit in June. Hillary herself dripped with haught, superior arrogance, referring to Trump's supporters as a 'basket of deplorables'. I genuinely don't think she ever gave any serious thought to losing to someone like Trump, who will now become the only President never to serve in political life or the military. But, Trump, against all the odds and mockery, just won the biggest prize of them all. Congratulations Donald - now go prove them all wrong again and be a great president.
