Emotional Keira Knightley and Will Smith have a passionate row in new trailer for star-studded festive movie Collateral Beauty

Following in the footsteps of seasonal classic Love Actually, an ensemble A-list cast are featuring in Hollywood's latest yuletide offering, Collateral Beauty.

But this movie comes with a unique twist.

The new official trailer sees lead man Will Smith interacting with a number of his female co-stars, such as Kate Winslet and Helen Mirren.

In one scene, he is having a heated exchange with Keira Knightley as they bicker at Rokefeller Center, New York.

At first glance, this looks to be a lovers' tiff - until it's revealed that Knightley is in fact playing the role of 'Love', a figment of Smith's character's imagination.

The film follows a successful advertising executive Howard Inlet (Smith) whose child dies, leading him to retreat from life entirely.

As a therapeutic exercise, Howard starts writing letters to 'Love', 'Time' and 'Death', which he posts.

Unexpectedly, they reply - in the form of people only he can see - reminiscent of the festive classic A Christmas Carol, which features ghosts of Christmas past, present and future.

While Knightley plays the role of 'Love', Mirren takes on the part of 'Death' and Jacob Latimore portrays 'Time'.

Howard's colleague is played by Oscar-winner Winslet, as she tries to devise a drastic plan to force him to confront his grief in a very surprising manner.

While Howard's exchanges with 'Death' and 'Time' seem fairly calm, he struggles to keep calm around 'Love'.

A snippet of the trailer sees the pair caught up in a fraught confrontation by the infamous New York Rockefeller ice rink.

'Love is the reason for everything!' declares 'Love' in the scene.

'I felt you every day when she laughed, and you broke my heart!' Howard snaps back, referring to the death of his daughter.

'I was there in her laugh; but I'm also here now in your pain,' insists 'Love'.

The film comes from Oscar winning director David Frankel (Dear Diary, The Devil Wears Prada) and also stars Edward Norton, Michael Peña and Naomie Harris.

Both Knightley and Winslet have previously featured in festive classics (Love Actually and The Holiday respectively) which have been predominantly centered around romance.

But Collateral Beauty seems to tackle a different type of love entirely.

Watching the film back is sure to be a difficult experience for 48-year-old Smith, who has just lost his father Willard Carroll Smith Sr.

The Independence Day actor has thrown himself into his work since losing his dad, as he shot outdoor scenes in a police uniform for the upcoming Netflix film Bright on Tuesday.

Smith's ex-wife Sheree Fletcher tok to Instagram on Monday night to announce the news witha throwback snap on Instagram of Will with their son Trey, 23, and his father. 

'We're gonna miss you Daddio! You lived & played by your own rules...,' she wrote in the caption.

'You truly were 1 of a kind! You instilled discipline, and a work ethic that has created a legacy in your honor!' she added.

The actor has yet to comment on his father's death, but his work ethic was in full force as he acted in scenes as police officer Scott Ward in the fantasy film due out in 2017.

The film is being directed by David Ayer, 48, who previously directed Will in Suicide Squad, and is being released on Netflix.

Bright tells the story of human cop Ward, played by Smith, and his Orc partner Nick Jacoby, played by Joel Edgerton.

They team up after discovering a powerful wand that attracts a slew of unsavory creatures. 

Collateral Beauty opens in cinemas on Boxing Day.
