Banking shares rose across the world on hopes that Donald Trump would ditch tough rules introduced after the financial crisis. The 2,300-page long Dodd-Frank act was brought in to protect US consumers and outlaw the riskiest financial behaviour - ensuring the crash never happened again. During the race for the White House, the next US president repeatedly said he would repeal it.

It is not clear yet whether the Government will switch to CPIH for index-linked state benefits - not least because it expected CPIH would geenrally give a higher rate than CPI.

What should investors do as era of President Trump dawns?

Investing experts are reiterating their pre-election advice : keep calm, stay invested, and wait for matters to become clearer before making big changes to your portfolio. This did, after all, stand investors in good stead after the Brexit vote. But opportunity knocks in times of uncertainty, and some assets, sectors and investing styles are being tipped to succeed under President Trump.

MARKET REPORT: Auto Trader races to a 21% increase in profits

The online car marketplace said operating profit was up 21 per cent compared with a year ago at £100.6m, with 58.5m visits to its sites in the six months to September 25. MARKET REPORT: Shares in financial data firm Experian fall 6 per cent

The Nottingham-based firm, best known for its credit scoring service, said the decision came after a review of its business. Experian said that while the division had won new clients and seen strong revenue growth, it did not fit in with the rest of the group's businesses. In the six months to September 30, Experian said performance in North America had been good while revenue growth in Latin America had hit 7 per cent. Operating profit was down 8 per cent at £408.9m.
