How Does This Fake OA Publisher Manage to Publish Over 500 articles Monthly?

The Global Journals

A publisher named The Global Journals, based in Gujarat, India, publishes hundreds of articles each month in its four broad-coverage journals. I don’t understand how such a low-quality and dishonest publisher is able to attract and publish so many articles.

The Global Journals publishes these four journals:

Global Journal for Research Analysis (GJRA)
International Journal of Scientific Research (IJSR)
PARIPEX Indian Journal of Research (PIJR)
Indian Journal of Applied Research (IJAR)

They are all published monthly; new issues for two of the journals appear at the beginning of each month. New issues for the other two appear in the middle of each month.

Table: Number of articles published by each journal from October, 2014 to February, 2015.

Table 1

The table shows that the Indian Journal of Applied Research published 248 articles in February, 2015! Why are so many researchers submitting papers to this publisher? Is it the easy acceptance and a relatively low author fee this publisher offers?

Fake impact factors

The journals all have flashing text claiming impact factors, but none has an authentic impact factor — this information is false and misleading.

Looking at the journals’ “Indexing” pages reveals more misleading and false information. The pages have the logos of many legitimate companies and services, but few or none of the services include the four journals. For example, the Thomson Reuters logo is there, but I cannot find any of the four journals on the TR Master List.

On the other hand, the pages have the logos for several fake impact factor companies. Some also have the image for SCIRUS, but this service no longer exists.

Indexing

Like many predatory publishers, this one provides contradictory information about licensing, specifically policies regarding copyright and Creative Commons licenses.

For example, all four journals’ homepages prominently display a Creative Commons license at the bottom of the pages:

Fake Creative Commons license

However, each journal requires authors whose papers are accepted for publication (that is, most all of them) to sign a form that transfers copyright to the publisher.

Summary: The Global Journals is another popular, yet low-quality, open-access publisher that uses misleading information to attract article manuscripts and their accompanying payments. All honest researchers should avoid this questionable publisher.

A favorite (randomly selected from the endless list of garbage):

“The analysis of the morphological characteristics of sealing
materials used in the primary prevention of dental caries
is a theme by strict actuality”

    http://www.theglobaljournals.com/ijar/file.php?val=March_2015_1425464213__188.pdf

“Given the results of the current study, further investigations […] are warranted.
Within the limitations of this study it was concluded that:
The quality and morphology of the particles of the filler
varies from one material to another”

If all of my research in materials science could end with “more studies are required” I’d have a lot more papers and the world would know a lot less about anything.

Their website is so poor; Enclosed the output which you get when you want to access a certain article in Full HTML. It is also the first publisher I am aware of who charges extra for extra authors; 500 Rupees per extra author !!!! GRA charges a humble amount towards publication fees of Rs. 1500/- for single author, (with maximum 2 to 3 graph/charts/tables/maps etc., else cost increases by Rs.500/- upto 2000 words. For every additional 750 words, Rs.500/- extra) for every Addition author Rs. 500/- extra to be paid, in Demand draft drawn in favour of “GLOBAL RESEARCH ANALYSIS” payable at Ahmedabad, all authors are entitle to receive a complimentary copy. Cheque at par drawn in favour of “GLOBAL RESEARCH ANALYSIS” is also acceptable. – See more at: http://theglobaljournals.com/gra/view.php?p=author-guidelines#sthash.LGHMdJhl.dpuf B.W. Bruce

    Check this link http://docs.google.com/viewer?url=http://theglobaljournals.com/ijar/recent_issues_pdf/.

It is the full text link to the article called “Study of molecular interactions of Chlorpromazine hydrochloride in different solvents at 308.15K.”

What a mess this site, low quality site as well articles!

  4. This article in the “IJAR” journal: http://www.theglobaljournals.com/ijar/file.php?val=March_2015_1425359969__19.pdf

Is virtually identical to a different article, in a different journal (but by the same publisher) called “IJSR”: http://theglobaljournals.com/ijsr/file.php?val=May_2014_1400566366_b8b3b_24.pdf

The authors are different. So either we have a case of plagiarism, or the publisher is duplicating their own articles to make themselves seem more popular.

  5. Samir Hachani says:

Simply because so many scatterbrained people send articles or what seems to be article for them. That’s really publish AND perish.

  6. Mr Hobbes says:

March is only 6 days old…the “current issue” (March 2015) of IJSR already lists 141 articles (6 March 15, 7:26:17 GMT), which already equals the number of articles published in the February issue.

Unbelievable. Either they have such a long backlog of articles what would mean that they really receive dozens to hundreds of poor submissions to their journals every day. This will bring up the question who is writing all these articles?

Or do they have a large “staff” of writers producing these junk science papers to attract a few paying customers?

  7. See our articles..We are scarce in getting high quality articles.while these global journals a plenty. What is the reeason
    http://www.biotechnologicalresearch-journal.com/
As the author of this blog had said journal looks not professionally good. But see our papers and say about their professional excellence.
We are not getting that much papers as GLOBAL Journals

    • Why did you start a new and broad-scoped biotechnology journal? There are already scores of such journals, and yours doesn’t even have an ISSN.

      • Sure Beall .we admit we dont have issn now.We will get in a couple of month and will index it in all reputed indexings.that is future only.but we will trying for that.

      • Are you sure the reputed indexings will include your journal? You promise?

      • Why elsievier and springer still producing broad spectrum biotech journals ?

      • Because people want to publish with them. The have ISSNs, their journals are included in the top indexes, their journals are distributed widely, and they add value through copyediting and other means.

      • Julius Jillbert @ Gravatars says:

Excuse me, I just sharing my experience. From what I know, the procedure to get an ISSN is tricky for some of us who are new to this and have limited time apart from their teaching or research duty to get this ISSN “quickly.” I am not promising anything and I do not wish someone to contact me on how to get it. I am writing this because I respect the people behind ISSN that I understand got limited time to process all the ISSN application and I also respect those who wish to get ISSN in their journal, etc. to My advice on this matter, is that one need to try to know knowing how to follow up the procedure (aka know the rules), and be patient. Stick to the rules. That’s all. Cheers

    • John says:

Link above is broken. Where are the high quality papers . I will like to read them and maybe cite :)

  8. Anatoli says:

If they are publishing 500 articles a month that means they get at least 500 submissions a month which is 6000 a year… Some of the good, really good publishers do not get so many submissions,, and some of the bad ones also do not get such numbers,,, I am sure even OMICS does not get such numbers,,, then how is it possible for this publisher to get such numbers…. Any one can solve this mystery???

    • Mr Hobbes says:

I have no idea about the majority. I just quickly checked for the only two articles with non-indian sounding author-names (one German, one Spanish) in the current issues of IJSR and IJAR.

In the article from Spain all Figures (total: 14) were skipped by the publisher (but not the Figure captions), which reduces the article’s main text to roughly less than 1 (short) page of text. :-)
      http://theglobaljournals.com/ijsr/file.php?val=March_2015_1425387447__31.pdf

In the article from Germany, reproduction of tables and figures is poor (unreadable). This might be not the fault of the authors but why then submitting there? In the publication list of the senior author are at least one other publication in a Clute Institute Journal…
      http://www.theglobaljournals.com/ijar/file.php?val=March_2015_1425360598__58.pdf

Might be a positive feedback system for some countries? Your boss publishes there (to keep his position?). You publish there (to keep your position?). Back to the beginning. But this is fully speculative.

      • martin says:

Two of those Germans seem to be respectable econ professors at TU Darmstadt. I wonder if they even know about this article.

    • Fureshiki says:

If I see that a new (max 2-3 years old) OA journal publish issues in which the overwhelming majority of authors have an african, indian or arabic sounding name, I tend to not take them seriously and even have the prejudice of instantly seeing them as scam/predatory journals. And I’m not alone with this in my department. Predatory journals are actually solidifying the monopoly of big established commercial publishers like Elsevier and Springer with rapidly discrediting open access journals and OA publishing in general; making very hard to start any new, independent and not commercial interest-driven scholarly journals.

  9. Samir Hachani says:

” Sure Beall .we admit we dont have issn now.We will get in a couple of month and will index it in all reputed indexings.that is future only.but we will trying for that ” And I thought my English was poor .

Thanks Jeff, another good sharing for us. Keep on your good work, mate!

Creative Commons is a form of copyright, just a particularly open one to people who want to make use of copyrighted material. I seem to remember this being explained to you in a comment thread months ago.

please i want to ask how i can know the journal is fake

  14. Some news in my inbox this morning:
“Indian Journal of Applied Research has released its April Issue, it is been well received by the academic fraternity. The issue includes papers on Management, Commerce, Medical Science, Education, Arts, Engineering etc.

However, IJAR is now been listed in the International ISSN Directory, Paris and offers authors a Copy of the Journal and Certificate of Publication. Thus your paper published in IJAR shall be acceptable in all the Institute/Universities in India and abroad.”

  15. ResearchGate lists “Impact Factor: 3.62″ for the Indian Journal of Applied Research”, see https://www.researchgate.net/publication/277994538
