Vets turn to tiny plaster casts to treat wave of hedgehogs with broken legs 

Vets have been left flummoxed after an unprecedented wave of injured hedgehogs came into their care - all suffering from broken legs. Eight hedgehogs were found with life-threatening fractures - but it remains a mystery as to how they received the injuries. The animals have been treated by a specialist orthopaedic vet and had X-rays at the centre in Surrey to assess the damage to their legs - and now sport colourful custom-made bandages to aid their recovery.

Firefighters battled to get the blaze under control in the city of Blagoveshchensk, eastern Russia. Dramatic footage shows a firefighter retreating down a ladder as the explosion of fireworks continued. More than 130 firefighters and around 40 fire trucks were sent to put out the fire. Three were taken to hospital with non life-threatening injuries. It is not yet clear what caused the explosion.
