Lee Harris survives on American Horror Story: Roanoke but Taissa Farmiga's character meets grisly end

Boozy cop Lee Harris was the sole survivor after the penultimate episode on Wednesday of American Horror Story: Roanoke.

The gutsy alcoholic played by Adina Porter wracked up her murder score considerably after making a dastardly deal with the malevolent spirits of the North Carolina woods.

The gruesome episode also saw the return of anthology regular Taissa Farmiga who played a ghost-hunting wannabe documentarian called Sophie.

Penultimate episode: Lee Harris, played by Adina Porter, was the sole survivor on Wednesday's episode of American Horror Story: Roanoke

She came to a grizzly end along with her two friends and nearly everyone else.

The show opened with Farmiga's character and her sleuth friends in search of the terrifying Shaker mansion.

The trio were avid fans of the My Roanoke Nightmare TV show and wore mobile cameras in hopes of creating viral videos.

'On the surface it's an interracial story set in a post-racial world, which of course is a lie,' remarked Sophie.

She's back: Taissa Farmiga returned to the anthology series as TV superfan Sophie

TV fans: Sophie and her buds Milo and Todd were out to make viral videos as fans of My Roanoke Nightmare

No trespassing: The trio went looking for the Shaker mansion

'But they're really talking about the colonisation of America, the Butcher and the Roanoke colony which became a matriarchy in a patriarchal system,' she continued.

The kids stumbled upon a sinister bare tree trunk, where Flora's sweater was found at the start of the series.

As they took photos they were confronted by a woman who staggered bleeding and dazed from the undergrowth.

Surprise encounter: Sophie and her friends encountered a woman in the woods bleeding from injuries and followed her

'My car!' shrieked the victim, before running off again.

They followed her to find an overturned vehicle in a clearing and the same woman dead inside.

'F***, is that the same girl?' Sophie asked.

Upside down: They came across a car upside down in a clearing

Same girl: Sophie and her friends were shocked to find the same girl dead inside the car

One of the young men, named Todd, started freaking out but the other two decided that posting the video was 'totally worth it' because it would 'go viral'.

After their ordeal the kids ended up in a police station recounting the story.

Back at the haunted mansion Audrey (Sarah Paulson) was with Lee and Gillian (Wes Bentley) who unveiled himself from behind a pig mask last week.

Haunted house: Gillian complained about the show's production as he met with Audrey and Lee

'This production is a s*** show, I've been in a motel for the last three days, not a word from anyone,' he complained.

'Sidney figured things would be getting a little stale by this point, I'm here to shake things up a bit,' he said, referring to the show's recently slain creator.

'You have a car?' asked Lee desperately.

'No I Uber-ed,' he replied before a cutaway of the handsome Uber driver Rhett Snow (Billy Snow) reappeared.

Uber ride: The actor took an Uber ride to the house and didn't have a car

Audrey hysterically told him that 'everybody is dead' and that Lee's wounds were real.

Ex-Navy Seal turned actor Gillian was unperturbed by the supernatural.

'I don't know what the ghosts have here but the people hunting us had AK-47s and RPGs,' he boasted.

Not worried: Audrey and Lee told Gillian that everybody was dead

With his 'never leave a man behind' attitude they set off to rescue Monet (Angela Bassett), the actress who played Lee.

At the inbred Polks' house it was the women who ended up doing the perilous sweep for missing Monet, while Gillian sat in the truck.

Audrey found Monet, while Lee searched for an incriminating video tape, which shows her admitting to the murder of her husband.

Rescue mission: Lee and Audrey searched for Monet as Gillian waited outside

Hillbilly cannibal Ishmael Polk found them and threatened to 'murder them real slow' but instead was shot in the head.

Outside Gillian was getting butchered by a younger Polk, but he was interrupted by the lights of the forest ghouls.

'Ain't nobody gonna save us now,' yelled Polk as he ran away.

Ominous lights: Torches could be seen in the distance headed toward the property

After escaping Monet and Audrey ended up back at the mansion, watching the tape of Lee's confession.

A cutaway piece of footage revealed Lee apparently making a bargain with a forest demon and eating a chunk of a still beating heart.

Back at the police station the authorities didn't believe the trio's tale, so the plucky kids ventured back to the horrifically haunted mansion for proof.

Police station: Sophie was interviewed by the police who didn't believe their story

Evil deal: Lee munched on a heart after striking some sort of deal with an evil spirit

'This was such a good idea,' they agreed.

They found Lee, who brutally slashed Todd apart, in one fell swoop.

Sophie and Milo ran screaming into the bushes and discovered the production site and Gillian, (who played the Butcher's son) stumbling out of the woods.

After knocking him down they barricaded themselves in the control room.

Big swing: Todd was brutally slashed to death by Lee with a cleaver

CCTV footage revealed Audrey and Monet, smoking and having a little 'liquid courage' at the house.

The new evil version of Lee staggered murderously toward the mansion.

Sophie wanted to rescue the women, but her friend Milo thought the idea was ludicrous.

Creepy trees: Sophie and Milo retreated as spooky symbols were seen in the trees

Control room: Sophie and Milo could see moving in on Audrey and Monet

'She killed Todd,' he reminded her.

At the house Audrey and Monet found the newly bewitched Lee brandishing a meat cleaver.

'You don't belong here, your vile presence defiles this sacred ground,' said Lee creepily.

Monet became confrontational so Lee pushed her over the banister, and she was impaled on a spike on the ground floor.

Fatal fall: Monet was impaled after Lee pushed her over a banister

Audrey was left to slash at Lee and then made a run for it.

Lee found her and hacked into her shoulder with the cleaver.

Sophie and Milo were outside filming when the dead Roanoke villagers arrived.

They disemboweled Gillian then took the kids captive.

'Present yourself for slaughter,' demanded Lee.

'We don't deserve to die you b****,' disagreed Milo.

Grisly end: Milo and Sophie had large stakes driven through them

On fire: The Roanoke villagers then set Sophie and Milo on fire

As they protested, the villagers impaled them on stakes and set them ablaze.

'The land will weep with blood and their souls will be offered as sacrifice,' yelled Lee.

The cops arrived the next morning to find their charred remain and the rest of the corpses littered throughout the house.

Next day: Police arrived the next morning and found the charred remains of Sophie and Milo

Bodies galore: The body of Dominic Banks also was found by police

They discovered Lee, alive but traumatised.

'Get me out of this hellhole,' she screamed.

Audrey was lying in the dirt nearby and as the police helped her up she spotted Lee.

She's alive: Lee was found alive and traumatised by authorities

Also found: Audrey also was found by police

'You, you f***ing murderer,' she growled.

Audrey in a fury stole an officer's gun and attempted to shoot Lee, but she missed so the cops gunned her down.

That left Lee, who had large chunks carved out of her leg thanks to the Polks, as the sole survivor.

The final episode of American Horror Story: Roanoke airs next Wednesday on FX.

Instant justice: Audrey after seeing Lee called her a murderer and tried to shoot her with an officer's gun

Shot dead: Police opened fire and killed Audrey after she shot at Lee and missed
