Conor McGregor is looking to make history by becoming the first man to hold two UFC titles consecutively when he takes on Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205.
The featherweight champion makes his lightweight debut in the promotion against the division’s king-pin as they headline what is set to be the biggest card in history.
Not only that but for the first time, the UFC will descend upon the city of New York after a 19-year ban on mixed martial arts was lifted in the state earlier this year.

The judges scored the bout unanimously in favour of Joanna Jedrezejczyk
The sheer volume of strikes accumulated by JJ surely has her in front despite the savage right hand in round four.
She is cruising here and content to stand in the pocket, trading blows with her fellow countrywoman.
With a minute remaining the undefeated queen of the strawweights ties up her opponent and winds the clock down to what she must expect to be a title defence.
Another hugely entertaining fight and there are still two to come!
Karolina smells blood! She wobbles JJ with a lightning combination and massive right hand. The champion is rocked but clings on as her foe continues with a ferocious pace.
She took that round and might need another significant moment in the fifth and final round to claim her prize.
The challenger is as game as they come, JJ is using her front kick as both a weapon and tool to keep range.
Both fighters are landing spiteful shots but without knockout force. They still look full of beans but the champion is perhaps slightly more fresh.
JJ shades the second round, landing with an increased volume but it is far from plain sailing.
She is forced up against the cage but somehow maintains balance with one leg under intense take-down pressure. She resists and appears to be loosening up as this one progresses.
The first is fought at a relentless pace. Kowalkiewicz controls the centre of the octagon but the champion is content to burst into life with a flurry of punches followed by kicks to the body.
This one is an intriguing contest and it seems Jedrzejczyk has a legitimate challenger here.
Joanna Jedrzejczyk vs Karolina Kowalkiewicz is the all Polish affair marking the first title fight of UFC 205.
The women's strawweight champion has been utterly dominant in her UFC career and pledged that the belt would remain with her for the rest of her career.
Good luck Karolina.
No man did more to help the UFC get to The Empire State than Chris Weidman, but the former middleweight champion’s homecoming did not go to plan.
Yoel Romero looked simply to big for the New Yorker as he grabbed himself the next shot at Michael Bisping’s world title.
Bisping was in attendance to give the Cuban the finger as he spoke to Joe Rogan following the fight.
Weidman had success with the takedowns but failed to make anything of them against a man who won a silver medal in freestyle wrestling at the 2000 Olympic Games.
A flying knee from ‘The Soldier of God’ was enough to seal the second shock of the night and maintain his undefeated UFC career.
Are you listening Michael Bisping? The middleweight champ sticks his middle fingers up as Romero calls him out after the impressive knockout.
That momentum shift at the end of round two continued in the last. Romero lands a devastating flying knee and Yamasaki calls him off as he lands the final blows.
Weidman complains as the start of round two is delayed as his opponent is towelled down after having water poured on him in the corner.
Eventually they resume and Weidman's take-down attempt is stuffed. You feel it won't be the last. Romero has failed to offer anything offensively and it seems the New York native is shading it.
Romero complains of an eye-poke and Mario Yamasaki pauses proceedings. Romero then has the better of the final two minutes, pushing Weidman up against the fence and landing nasty knees. He then dominates the last twenty seconds with ground and pound.
The only New York native on the card, Chris Weidman, walks out to an appropriate mash up of 'I'm Coming Home', 'Empire State of Mind' and Tom Petty's 'I Won't Back Down.'
He starts brightly but the muscle-bound Romero lands a heavy body-kick. The rest of the round is cagey with both fighters feeling each other out. Weidman lands a take-down in the dying seconds but it is short-lived.
Cheers from the crowd as the camera pans to Madonna at octagon-side. Bigger cheers as it moves to Gordon Ramsey. But the biggest come as McGregor is shown arriving at the arena in a custom-three piece.
Alvarez's entrance, meanwhile, is met with a wave of jeers.
Miesha Tate announced her retirement at the conclusion of a eye-opening defeat to her former pupil.
The legendary bantamweight’s hopes of getting a super-fight with the likes of Ronda Rousey or Cris Cyborg disappeared in a drab affair that drew boos from some sections of the crowd.
There is no doubt, however, that Raquel Pennington deserved to come out on top after edging almost every aspect of the clash.
Pennington controlled the stand up, connecting with the jab with ease other the No 1 contender.
Grappling specialist Tate tried her best to get hold of the 28-year-old but had little success, ending up in a number of precarious positions herself.
The bout brings an end to a storied career, that peaked when 'Cupcake' took home the gold at UFC 196 back in April.
Raquel Pennington now has the longest active winning streak in the women's bantamweight division after taking the judges decision.
The close quarters battle is fought on the mat at the start of the third. Pennington is on top but Tate threatens an arm bar from underneath.
Pennington slips free and maintains the dominant spot until with ninety seconds left Tate forces her way back to her feet.
That final minute and a half is shaded by Pennington who again ends up on top and should have done enough to hand Tate her second consecutive defeat.
This one is becoming a brawl fought at close quarters. Pennington has her opponent pinned against the cage and the pair exchange elbows and knees without enough leverage to cause significant damage.
Both fighters show signs of the gruelling battle as the buzzer sounds to signal the end of the round. A dominant last five minutes for one of these two should be enough to take the win.
Pennington controls the centre of the octagon with Tate keeping her honest with leg kicks but ends up pressed against the cage.
Tate walks up the cage in astonishing scenes as Pennington has her neck. She survives. Just. And then manages to turn the tables, landing a take-down which is short-lived.
Who'd be a judge? That one was tough to call.
The octagon girls shared their own back-stage version of mannequin challenge.
The main card awaits. And we begin with former women's champion Meisha Tate against Raquel Pennington.
It's a rare coach of teacher versus student with Tate having coached Pennington on season 18 of The ultimate Fighter.
What a fight. The crowd are on the feet and both men have their arms raised at the bell.
It’s Frankie Edgar, however, who gets the win through a combination of brilliant footwork, movement and unpredictability.
Cries of ‘Let’s go Frankie’ rang out as the New Jersey native secured takedown after takedown but Stephens almost silenced them.
A stunning high kick followed by a knee saw Edgar hit the mat but he managed, albeit wobbled, to get back to his feet.
With The Garden willing him on he took ‘Lil’ Heathen back down a multiple times and came close to submitting him on a couple of occasions on the way to a unanimous decision.
A back-and-forth battle sees Edgar triumph with a number of well timed take-downs earning him a decision victory.
Edgar and Stephens are putting on an incredible show with both almost finishing the other in the opening two rounds.
We're about to find out who can assert their authority in the final five minutes..
Donald Cerrone gets the biggest cheer of the night as he is shown on the big screen.
Cowboy had been due to fight on the main card of this event but had his fight cancelled after Kelvin Gastelum missed weight at Friday's official weigh-in.
Frankie Edgar had wanted to headline this event against McGregor but things haven't gone to plan for the American.
He will have to find his way past Jeremy Stephens to make his way back into a title conversation.
Michael Johnson showed he is as tough as nails but Khabib showed exactly why he had a record of 23-0 heading into this bout.
The classic grappler versus striker match-up had the arena gasping throughout.
Johnson’s lightning hands looked dangerous from the start but there is little anyone can do once the Russian gets a hold of them.
The American fought valiantly, withstanding a tremendous amount of damage, but eventually succumbed to the power of the sambo master.
Khabib doesn't make the same mistake as Tony Ferguson and quickly takes aim at Conor McGregor following the victory.
The Eagle labels McGregor a 'chicken' and questions how he is getting a title shot tonight after tapping to Nate Diaz earlier this year.
He asks Rogan if he deserves the next lightweight title shot. The commentator says yes. 'Let's go. Let's go with your chicken,' he adds before walking off.
Michael Johnson's ring-walk was a thing of beauty...
The Garden is certainly enjoying its first taste of mixed martial arts action but there's no mistaking who most of those in attendance have come to see.
A roar erupts every time McGregor's face appears on the big screen.
Two men who won't be cheering for the Irishman are fellow lightweights Khabib Numagomedov and Michael Johnson.
The two will be out on the hour as they bid to put themselves in line for the next shot at the winner of tonight's main event.
This one should be a cracker with undefeated Nurmagomedov taking on Johnson who put in one of his best performances in his last fight against Dustin Poirier, who he finished in the first round.
Another quick finish. The crowd enjoyed that one.
Natal may have lived in New York for eight years but he certainly didn’t look at home in the octagon tonight.
Boetsch controlled the centre from the start, drawing blood in the first exchange continuing to catch his opponent at will.
Natal was a picture of tentativeness and ‘The Barbarian’ landed a devastating right hand to finish the contest with plenty of time left to go in the first.
Well that one didn't last long! Luque finishes his opponent inside the first round with a flurry of punches after downing Muhammad with a perfectly aimed left hand.
The referee appeared late to intervene allowed Luque to land some extra shots when Muhammad was out cold.
In the second of the early prelims, Jim ‘Mayhem’ Miller became the man with most wins in UFC lightweight history (17), defeating Thiago Alves via unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28, 30-27)
The Brazilian looked to be feeling the effects of what was clearly a brutal weight cut, as Miller continued to find a home for his left hand.
As the fight progressed Miller made the fight ugly, outworking Alves before taking him to the canvas and holding him there for the majority of the contest.
Women’s bantamweight contenders Liz Carmouche and Katlyn Chookagian became the first fighters in UFC history to compete in New York City.
Carmouche, who was also involved in the promotion’s first female title fight, losing to Ronda Rousey, dominated the first two rounds, flooring her opponent with a series of vicious takedowns.
Chookagian entered the third and final round needing something special and almost managed it, dropping Carmouche with a perfect head kick before pouring on the pressure.
The veteran weathered the storm, however, and saw out the round to secure the victory via split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28).
