The opening episode of the seventh season saw 20.8 million people tune in to graphically see Negan brutally murder Abraham and Glenn.

The villain had commanded Rick Grimes to cut off son Carl's arm and despite his father's hesitation, Carl selflessly encouraged Rick to go through with the act to save the others.

He went as far as raising the axe before Negan stopped him, knowing that he had broken the elder Grimes' will.
