Amy Adams is the picture of elegance in sleek black maxi dress with low-cut sides at Nocturnal Animals screening in LA

She is a five-time Oscar and BAFTA nominee, as one of the top Hollywood actresses.

But Amy Adams proved she is worthy of an award for her style too, as she made a show-stopping red carpet appearance on Friday night.

The screen star, 42, looked incredibly elegant in a sleek and chic black maxi dress as she arrived at a screening for her new film Nocturnal Animals in Los Angeles.

Show-stopping: Amy Adams, 42, looked incredibly elegant in a sleek and chic black maxi dress as she arrived at a screening for her new film Nocturnal Animals in Los Angeles on Friday

The American Hustle star turned heads of all at the event, held at the Hammer Museum in Westwood, in her simple but stunning floor-length gown.

The jet black dress was incredibly sophisticated, securing into a high roll neck before skimming her figure softly to the floor.

However the sleeveless number then cut daringly to her waist at the sides, giving a sexy but subtle hint of side boob and her gorgeous, porcelain skin.

Look super sophisticated in a black dress like Amy

At the premiere for Nocturnal Animals in Los Angeles, Amy Adams arrived looking totally glamorous in a black gown by Tom Ford.

The flame-haired star look totally classic in the column dress that had been given a racy twist with the help of the low slung sides.

Tom Ford actually directed the film that stars Amy, so it was hardly surprising that the star was donning one of his designs to the premiere. He's clearly rather multi-talented!

It's that time of year again when party season is upon us and you'll be no doubt hunting down a ball dress is no time. You might not be able to buy Amy's pick because it was custom made for her, but you can shop the designer's current line at Net-a-Porter (right).

Alternatively, why not keep it classic in a black maxi with one of the options lined up below. Our favourite has got to be the dress by Adrianna Papell.

Keeping the look impeccably styled, Amy accessorised with classy chunky gold earrings and a shimmering black box clutch bag, to tie the outfit together.

Straightening her famous fiery tresses and opting for a soft smoky eye, the Doubt star embodied classic Hollywood glamour as she dazzled for cameras at the event.

Nocturnal Animals, which hit UK cinemas last week, is a psychological thriller directed by designer Tom Ford and based on the 1993 novel Tony and Susan By Austin Wright.

The flick follows Amy as an art-gallery owner called Susan, who is haunted by her ex-husband's novel - a violent thriller which she then interprets as a veiled threat and tale of revenge.

The film, which co-stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Isla Fisher, is set to be a success after it bagged the Grand Jury prize at the Venice Film Festival - which is considered the second place award, after the Golden Lion.

Amy recently paid tribute to the vision of director Tom Ford - more famous as a fashion designer- for the film.

'Tom explained in such a beautiful way how he would use music, sound and light to pull us in and out of story and time and space,' she told Deadline.

The film is just one of many filling Amy's busy schedule recently.

She travelled the world to promote alien flick Arrival with Jeremy Renner last month, and is now anticipating the release of the new Justice League installment next year.

Perhaps more excitingly however, the redhead announced that she will be returning to screens as her famous Disney princess character Gisele - with Enchanted 2, entitled Disenchanted,  being confirmed for production.

In its early stages, Amy admitted on the Graham Norton Show last month that she had not been approached for the role yet.

However in her usual witty style, she declared defiantly: 'I'm not gonna let anybody else play Giselle.'

Star-studded: The film, which also stars Armie Hammer, Andrea Riseborough, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Michael Shannon, Isla Fisher and Jake Gyllenhaal (L-R), hit UK cinemas last week
