England 3-0 Scotland - PLAYER RATINGS: Raheem Sterling and Kyle Walker impress for Gareth Southgate's side as Scott Brown flops on return

England and Scotland are the fiercest of rivals, but this World Cup qualifier was one-sided as Gareth Southgate's men eased to a 3-0 victory.

Daniel Sturridge, Adam Lallana and Gary Cahill all netted with headers as a wasteful Scotland were brushed aside.

Gareth Southgate's men were comfortable 3-0 victors in the World Cup qualifier at Wembley

ENGLAND (4-2-3-1)

Joe Hart – Didn't really have a save to make as he watched his team-mates dominate the game. 6

Kyle Walker – Positive from the outset and was rewarded with an assist for Sturridge's opener. 8

Kyle Walker was an excellent attacking outlet for England and set up their opening goal

Gary Cahill – Solid enough and scored but not entirely comfortable with England's ploy to pass out from the back. 7

John Stones – He can scare us, but we should get used to the fact England (finally) have a ball-playing centre-back. 7

Danny Rose – Maintained his grip on the left-back spot with a typical all-action performance. 7.5

Eric Dier – Kept it simple in the engine room. Quietly went about his business to keep the Scots at bay. 7

Jordan Henderson – As ever, put in the hard yards for England – but his passing radar was off at times. 7

Raheem Sterling – Positive display from the Manchester City attacker. Played a key role two of England's goals. 7.5

Raheem Sterling (left) gets away from Scotland's Scott Brown in England's 3-0 success

Wayne Rooney – Showed some flashes of the old Rooney but we're used to so much more. 7

Adam Lallana – His influence was restricted out on the left, but still scored his first Wembley goal for England. 7.5

Daniel Sturridge – Had just nine touches in the first-half. He'll only care about the one that gave England the lead. 7

Subs: Vardy (for Sturridge 74, 6)

Not used: Heaton, Pickford, Walcott, Jagielka, Bertrand, Townsend, Kane, Rashford, Wilshere, Lingard

Gareth Southgate – There's still plenty work to do, but he should now be given the chance to complete what he's started. 7.5

SCOTLAND (4-2-3-1)

Craig Gordon – Had to have a good night if Scotland were to have any hope at Wembley. He didn't. 6

Ikechi Anya – Kept Lallana's impact on the game down to a minimum until losing the Liverpool star for England's second. 6.5

Grant Hanley – Should have got on the scoresheet moments after England went ahead. Had to get through plenty work. 6.5

Scotland's dejected players react as they went down to another qualifying defeat

Christophe Berra – A sturdy display from the Ipswich centre-back. No nonsense defending. 6

Lee Wallace – Lucky not to give away a penalty and had his hands full with Sterling running at him. 6

Scott Brown – The Celtic braveheart came out of international retirement for this game but his impact was minimal. 5.5

On his return to the Scotland side, Celtic midfielder Brown endured a miserable evening

Darren Fletcher – Brought calm to Scotland's midfield as England dominated possession but will have hated every minute of this. 6

James Forrest – His miss just after the restart will haunt him for the next few days. Was virtually non-existent before then. 5.5

Robert Snodgrass – The Hull schemer probed for an opening but missed a glorious opportunity to equalise. 6

His team's defeat is all too much for one Scotland fan who has to contemplate the result

James Morrison – Largely anonymous as Scotland struggled to get the ball into attacking areas. 5

Leigh Griffiths – Worked tirelessly but didn't have the quality to trouble England on a consistent basis. Booked. 5.5

Subs: McArthur (for Morrison 66, 6); Ritchie (for Snodgrass 82); Paterson (for Anya 79)

Not used: Marshall, Hamilton, Chris Martin, Russell Martin, Naismith, Steven Fletcher, Bannan, Burke, Kingsley

Gordon Strachan: Will the likeable Scot survive this? The pressure on him is immense. 5.5

Referee: Cunyet Cakir (TUR) – Denied England a number of potential penalties but can be satisfied with his night's work. 6.5

Attendance: 87, 258

Man of the match: Kyle Walker

Scotland boss Gordon Strachan feels the pain of a result which may cost him his job
