'I never truly believed Trump could win': Lena Dunham admits she felt 'smug' at polling booth on election day… then broke out in hives after Clinton's defeat

Lena Dunham has spoken out for the first time following Hillary Clinton's loss to Donald Trump in the presidential election on Tuesday, urging Clinton supporters to continue the fight.

'In this new reality, we have all been radicalized,' she wrote. 'Don't agonise, organise.'

She took to her Lenny Newsletter on Friday to talk about her pain at the unexpected result and what she hoped would happen going forward.

Full of hope: Lena Dunham, pictured proudly wearing an I Voted sticker on Tuesday with her boyfriend Jack Antonoff, wrote about Hillary Clinton's loss to Donald Trump for the first time in her Lenny Newsletter on Friday

The 30-year-old, who spent 18 months campaigning for the Democratic presidential candidate, revealed: 'I woke up on Election Day like a bride: rosy, thrilled, a little controlling about just how MY perfect day would be spent

'Jesus, it's almost embarrassing to remember - I smugly selected a baby-blue sweater with a not-so-subtle pussy motif and headed to vote.

'Because as horrifying as I found Donald Trump's rhetoric, as hideous as I found his racism and xenophobia, as threatening to basic decency as I found his demagogue persona, I never truly believed he could win.'

And she was at the Javits Center with her Fun rocker boyfriend Jack Antonoff and the Clinton crowd on Tuesday night when 'it became clear something had gone horribly wrong.

Read to celebrate: Lena and Lady Gaga were in high spirits at Clinton's event on election night, but the Girls star later broke out in hives when she realised her hero had lost
'Don't agonise, organise': The 30-year-old urged supporters to look to the future saying, 'The work isn't done. It is only beginning. We will stun ourselves with what we are capable of'

'Watching the numbers in Florida, I touched my face and realised I was crying. 'Can we please go home?' I said to my boyfriend. I could tell he was having trouble breathing, and I could feel my chin breaking into hives.'

Lena revealed that she and other female campaigners were horribly abused on social media by haters in the months leading up to the election.

'But we kept going, thinking these were the dying moans of the dragon known as the patriarchy being stabbed again and again in the stomach.

She's not turning her back on the cause: 'Wednesday was a day of mourning. Thursday, too. Hell, I'm giving us till Sunday. But then we fight, Lena wrote

'We believed that on November 9, they'd be licking their wounds while we celebrated. It is painful on a cellular level knowing those men got what they wanted.

'It's painful to know that white women, so unable to see the unity of female identity, so unable to look past their violent privilege, and so inoculated with hate for themselves, showed up to the polls for him, too.'

And she ended with a rallying cry, saying: 'Wednesday was a day of mourning. Thursday, too. Hell, I'm giving us till Sunday. But then we fight.

She's behind Clinton:  And Lena revealed that she would continue to fight for the causes that Hillary espoused

'Now, more than ever, our power is in numbers and in our refusal to accept the idea that our leaders intrinsically know what's best for us, better than the people we meet every day.'

Thanking Clinton for her '30 years of public service, she added: 'So no, the work isn't done. It is only beginning.

'We will stun ourselves with what we are capable of.'

Getting an early start: Lena interviewed Hillary Clinton's daughter Chelsea  back in March

And Lena has already started her own personal campaign to change things, posting two cartoons on Instagram on Friday morning.

One depicts a multi-racial, multi religious collection of men and women, with a long captioned that read: 'Like so many of you I have been gutted, breath taken in the worst way, by the results of this week's election- a sadness like a death or a separation, crushing and fresh every hour.

'But in the words of the immortal Flo Kennedy we most organize, not agonize. AND: if you wonder why comments are disabled on this post? I refuse to take any more verbal abuse, threats of violence, taunts, jabs at my body, my family, my humanity.

Hope rises: Lena has already started her own personal campaign, posting this cartoon on Instagram on Friday morning with a long caption urging like-minded people to fight for change

'I refuse not just for me but for all of us. Across many intersections, we are done. There is no space left - the caverns of begrudging acceptance have been emptied and filled with fight. Just like she would want. Just like all the those who have fought for us would demand.'

Another shows her flying away in a sock attached to a multi-coloured balloon, captioned: 'And for those demanding I move to Canada based on something I said when this man seemed like a steak salesman with a long shot at the presidency: stay busy reveling in your new regime.

'I will go many places during my lifetime, surrounded by kindreds on a mission to spread justice and light.

'I can't wait for all of of this, and for the change to come, as we use what we've been given to protect those who can't protect themselves. What are you living for?

Up, up and away: A second cartoon shows her flying off to bigger and better things, riffing off a comment she made about moving to Canada if Donald Trump became president
