'I'm just gonna go cold turkey and go sober': Michael Bublé reveals his decision to stop drinking and partying after becoming a father jeopardised his singing voice and led to his surgery

He's the singer who has sold more than 55 million albums worldwide.

But, Michael Bublé's future singing career looked uncertain earlier this year when he was forced to undergo vocal cord surgery.

The 41-year-old admitted during an interview with Sunday Night that his voice had suffered after he decided to stop drinking and put his partying ways behind him.

At this point in his life he had two young boys and while he enjoyed partying with friends he wanted to put his kids first.

'I said to myself, I want to be more present. I don't want to be wasted or anything like that and I'm just gonna go cold turkey and go sober, and I did,' he admitted.

The Canadian songwriter said the decision was made for his family, but the unexpected side-effect of his 'cold turkey' approach could have put his career in jeopardy.

'My voice got mushed from it!' The Canadian singer-songwriter said soon after deciding to quit drinking and become more present for his sons, his voice changed and required urgent vocal cord surgery

The Haven't Met You Yet singer said soon after he went sober, his voice changed.

'I stopped everything. And you know what happened? It...my voice got mushed from it,' Michael said. 

The Grammy award winner said for many singers it can be a terrifying experience, but his doctor encouraged him.

'The doctor said, "Listen, dude. This is hard on your voice, your body's got used to a certain way of living,"' he recalled.

He added that his doctor also gave him, and unknowingly his fans, fantastic news.

'And he said, "The good news is you're gonna live much longer now and your voice is gonna be much stronger than it ever was,"' Michael added.

New opportunity! Michael says he saw it as a chance to grow, saying it felt like an opportunity to actually take control of his career for the first time

Making the most of his new, stronger voice he's likely have many more years of hits up his sleeves.

'I felt it was an opportunity for me, for the first time in my career, to actually take control,' he said.
