Donatella Versace, who is one of the world's most lauded female style icons, has claimed that gay male fashion designers design for the 'women they want to be' rather than their customers.
Speaking to The Times Magazine, the 61-year-old vice president and chief designer of the Versace Group said: 'I love gay people. My friends are all gay. But some of the designers, when they design for a woman, they design for the woman they want to be.'
The Italian designer added: 'They are thinking of themselves. But themselves and the woman are not the same.'

Versace, whose clothes are loved by the Kardashians and Hadids, went on to suggest that these designers should look to the 'real woman'.
The designer's comments come after Us Weekly reported that pop star Lady Gaga will be playing the designer on the third series of American Crime Story.
Last month, Variety reported that the series will portray the murder of Donatella's elder brother, Gianni Versace, who founded the eponymous fashion house.
American Crime Story is executive produced by Ryan Murphy, for whom Gaga's given a Golden Globe-winning performance on American Horror Story: Hotel. She's also featured on the current series of that programme, which is subtitled Roanoke.

As Us Weekly have pointed out, he may have teased her latest potential casting whilst speaking onstage at the Entertainment Weekly PopFest last fortnight.
When an audience member floated the Bad Romance singer as 'the perfect Donatella,' the 50-year-old offered a smile and a: 'Ya think?', prompting applause.
Lady Gaga's song Donatella appeared on her 2013 album ARTPOP. Despite the fact the lyric calls its subject 'a rich b****' and goads her to 'Walk down the runway, but don't puke,' the 61-year-old recognised publicity when she saw it.
That August, she emailed JustJared: 'I would like to thank Gaga for her geniality, creativity, incredible talent and super bitchiness. I am honoured to be her friend and of course I love the song! Love, DV.'
She and the New York City native have often been photographed together, and Gaga subsequently became the face of Versace's 2014 spring/summer ad campaign.

Gianni Versace, who launched his company in 1978, was shot dead outside his mansion in Miami Beach in 1997. Eight days later, the culprit, serial killer Andrew Cunanan, committed suicide by gunshot on a houseboat.
The American Crime Story version will be based on the 1999 book Vulgar Favours: Andrew Cunanan, Gianni Versace, and the Largest Failed Manhunt in US History by Maureen Orth.
According to WWD, the Versace brand have insisted that they've 'neither authorised nor had any involvement whatsoever in the forthcoming series about Versace. The series should only be seen as a work of fiction.'
American Crime Story's first go was entitled The People v OJ Simpson and seized nine Emmy Awards this year, including for Outstanding Limited Series and for performances by Sarah Paulson, Courtney B Vance and Sterling K Brown. Its second series will centre on the 2005 Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath.
MailOnline has contacted a spokesperson for Donatella Versace and Lady Gaga and is awaiting comment.
