A harrowing open letter (inset) was published by the Cheltenham Guardians after they spent two hours caring for a vulnerable young woman named 'Emily' (pictured main) who was left by her friends during a night out on Friday. The group looked after the heavily intoxicated Emily while they attempted to track down her friends who thought it 'was funny' she was unable to look after herself. During the course of the night Emily was cared for by four different groups of volunteers and emergency service staff. Eventually she had to be taken away in an ambulance, costing the NHS £300.

Terry Foster who beat cancer after having 'hours to live' was then sacked

Terry Foster was diagnosed with lymphoma in 2007, while his wife, Melanie, was pregnant with their first child. The refrigerator engineer spent 19 days in intensive care and at one point was placed in a side room to die after he was given just 48 hours to live. But the father-of-one, from Southport, Merseyside, fought back and doctors were surprised when his condition improved to the point he could be sent home. After meeting up with his manager about returning to his job at CIAT Ozonair, he was shocked to hear he was being sacked. A letter from the company said it 'would be negligent to subject you to undue stress and pressure'. The firm then informed him he had lost his job after forcing him to drive to Glasgow. Mr Foster said: 'I went into a state of shock. When I told my wife she burst into tears, it was awful, we had a newborn baby and it was the most horrible time for both of us.'

New Zealand's South Island hit with magnitude 7.4 earthquake

A magnitude 7.8 earthquake centred north of Christchurch on New Zealand's South Island struck just after midnight on Sunday, triggering a two-metre high tsunami. The NZ government's GeoNet website said the earthquake, which was 15km deep, was severe and felt throughout the country. A tsunami has been generated in response to the earthquake and the first wave arrived on the eastern coast of the South Island just before 2am on Monday local time, according to the NZ Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management. The largest waves, between three to five metres, are expected between Marlborough Peninsula near Wellington and Banks Peninsula.

Mummy of servant of king Thutmose III's household is discovered in 'good condition' in

Spanish archaeologists have discovered a millennia-old mummy in 'very good condition' near the southern Egyptian town of Luxor. The find was in a tomb (right) probably dating from between 1075-664 BC. The mummy had been bound with linen stuck together with plaster. First robot butler on offer to luxury LA renters for $25,000 a month and it can operate

People who can afford $25,000 (£20,000) a month to hire a luxury apartment in Los Angeles are being offered a robot butler, which provides room service with a personal touch. Crescent Heights, who operates a 40-storey tower block in Beverly Hills, have thrown in the electronic valets, nicknamed Charley (pictured), as part of the rental fee. Striking images show the vast landscape of the continent which is home to the to the coldest, windiest and driest conditions on the planet. Scientists don climbing gear to squeeze their way through the naturally formed ice caves dotted around the vast area, top centre. Scott Base in New Zealand, bottom right, is vital to the their survival when exploring the continent and are kept company by the wildlife including penguins, bottom centre, and whales.
