Resurrected! Dave Chappelle plays Negan in Walking Dead skit while hosting SNL... as well as a half dozen of his most famous characters

Dave Chappelle resurrected some his most famous characters for a Walking Dead skit on Saturday Night Live.

The legendary comedian returned to host for the first time ever, and one of his first sketches saw him pick up the dreaded barb wired-baseball bat of baddie Negan.

But instead of Rick Grimes and his crew, lined up in front of him were the beloved stars of The Chappelle Show, including king of crunk Lil’ Jon and crack addict Tyrone Biggums.

In fact it was old Biggums who felt the kiss of Lucille, with Negan knocking his head clean off with one swing.

But when he went to finish the job, the severed head scurried away from him and somehow wound up in the hands of his still animated body.

The detached head then made a rousing speech.

‘Let us see ourselves in one another, for only empathy can conquer hate,’ he announced before veering off into lyrics from Whitney Houston’s I'm Every Woman.

Not scared: The Player Haters, including Andy 'Silky' Johnston, openly mocked Negan's outfit

Obviously: Blind - and black - white supremacist Clayton Bigsby was unsurprisingly revealed to be a Trump supporter

Chappelle hurriedly quit his eponymous show 11 years ago, despite being offered $50 million to film a third and fourth season. He then disappeared to South Africa for some 'quiet time'.

SNL's musical interlude was provided by Jarobi White and Q-Tip of A Tribe Called Quest.

Busta Rhymes and New York rapper Consequence also appeared for a sing-a-long with Chappelle.

Eeny meany: Lil Jon and crackhead Tyrone Biggums also joined the line-up

Weekend Update with Colin Jost and Michael Che centered around Trump gags.

‘If you’re 70 and have no experience you couldn’t get hired at Target,’ joked Jost calling the election ‘the plot of The Intern’ (a movie where Robert De Niro tries out a new career as a geriatric).

‘America’s like Leslie Jones – addicted to white guys,’ quipped Jost.

Che called Clinton ‘unbreakable’ and a ‘gangster’ for persevering in her political career.

Houston we have a problem: ‘Let us see ourselves in one another, for only empathy can conquer hate,’ he announced before veering off into lyrics from Whitney Houston’s I'm Every Woman

Kate McKinnon appeared as liberal Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg of the Supreme Court.

‘I’m never going to step down now, you can’t get rid of me,’ she cackled.

‘I’m eating an apple a day to keep Ben Carson away,’ she added, before speculating that Mike Pence might be gay.

‘He looks like that neighbour from American Beauty,’ she giggled.

Darndest things: In a skit called ‘Kids Talk Politics’ Vanessa Bayer discussed the election with some children, including Dave Chappelle’s adorable daughter Sonal

Ahem: ‘My daddy says that Donald Trump will stop and frisk my cat, we have a black cat... his name is Pussy,’ she said

Chappelle smoked cigarettes through a couple of the sketches and segways, including when he played a drunken bar fly.

Elixir: In his final skit Chappelle played a 43-year-old male who was still living at home with his mother, and being breastfed

‘That’s exactly why I’m so jacked…you have any idea how many vitamins are in this elixir?’ He boasted.

The Undercover Brother star closed the show by saying: ‘Making a comeback is scary as hell…I wouldn’t even call it a comeback but it’s so much better than not coming at all’.

SNL’s 42nd season continues next week on NBC, with actress Kristen Wiig and English indie pop band The XX.

'I’m not giving up, and neither should you': Kate's Hillary Clinton played the late Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah during a jokeless opening
