Mexico captain Rafael Marquez headed in a late winner to secure a dramatic 2-1 victory over the United States in a World Cup qualifier on Friday.

The visitors delivered a brutal knockout punch to the Americans as Marquez directed a header in from a corner in the 89th minute to deflate the hosts who had dominated a feisty second half.

Emotions between the two sides were running high in Ohio in the wake of Donald Trump's presidential election victory on Tuesday.

The controversial businessman had labelled Mexicans as 'rapists' and 'criminals' during his campaign and promised to build a wall on the border between the two countries if elected.

As a result, the match between the bitter CONCACAF rivals was ill-tempered at times and featured eight yellow cards and a late red for Carlos Salcedo.

Miguel Layun opened the scoring for Mexico with a deflected shot midway through the first-half and 'El Tri' looked poised to build their lead further when Tim Howard was forced out of the game with what appeared to be a leg injury.

However, the United States survived the assault and then shifted the momentum of the match when Bobby Wood leveled in the second-half after a fine run and pass from Jozy Altidore.

Jurgen Klinsmann's side dominated the second period but were made to pay shortly before the final whistle when Marquez got across his man at the front post to glance in a superb late winner.

Elsewhere, Costa Rica defeated Trinidad and Tobago 2-0 and Panama beat Honduras 1-0 as every away side opened with three points.
