A lottery winner who won £70,000 on a scratchcard has been jailed for six months after throttling his wife and slapping a five-year-old child in the face.

Balvinder Malhotra, 30, punched his wife Hardeep Kaur, 28, three times in a 'sustained attack' at their home in Hounslow, West London after they had a blazing row at a picnic.

Only months earlier the couple looked a picture of happiness as they celebrated Malhotra's big win which he declared would make 2016 'a great year for his family'.

Uxbridge magistrates court heard the off-license worker had a drinking problem and once gave his mother a bloody nose, reports the Sun

Malhorta was jailed for six months for GBH and ordered to pay his victims £1,000 each.

District Judge Debbie Wright said: 'You've clearly got the means to pay. He had a lottery win.'

After seeing pictured of Ms Kaur's bruised face, she said: 'These are significant injuries. This crosses the custody threshold by a mile.'

Malhotra, who had £87,000 in the bank after the attack in June, used the money he won to buy a small off-license shop.

He said at the time of the win in January: 'When I told my wife she burst into tears of joy. I used to have a shop but we lost this when big retailers moved in. This win will give me the boost I need. Looks like 2016 is going to be a great year for our little family.'

Malhotra now lives with his parents and does not see Ms Kaur.
