Product Description

Advair is an FDA approved prescription medicine that is intended for the treatment of allergies. It contains the combination of salmeterol and fluticasone which prevents breathing difficulties by relaxing the muscles in the airways. The steroid fluticasone present in this medicine blocks the release of substance that triggers inflammation in a person’s body.

Different forms of this medicine are intended for different age groups. For instance, ADVAIR DISKUS is for patients who are 4 years or older. ADVAIR HFA is for patients who are 12 years and older.

Medical Uses

It is a prescription asthma medicine that can be both for children and adults. But it is not a replacement for rescue inhaler and must be taken with according to a set pattern as a course of therapy as intended by the doctor. Advair is only prescribed by medicos when long term treatment for asthma fails to show some effect on people. In addition, the medicine is also used for conditions such as COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) which includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis.

Dosage and Administration

The medicine is made in the form of inhalation aerosol or inhalation powder in the dosage strengths of 100 mcg fluticasone – 50 mcg salmeterol, 250 mcg fluticasone – 50 mcg salmeterol and 500 mcg fluticasone – 50 mcg salmeterol. For the treatment of COPD 250 mcg fluticasone – 50 mcg salmeterol is taken orally twice a day with a minimum gap of 12 hours in between each interval. This is the maximum recommended dose as increasing the dose was not known to increase the effectiveness. To cure asthma however, either of the available doses of Advair can be taken but only after getting consent from the doctor.

What to do in case of missing a dose and overdose?

To avoid missing any doses of Advair, it is better you take the medicine at the same time each day. This will help you to remember taking the med on time. Skip the missed dose if it is already time for the next dose. For overdose, rush to any nearest hospital immediately so as to treat yourself at the earliest.

Serious side effects arising from this medicine is a rare case. But there is a possibility of this happening if one consumes fake or inferior pill.

What drugs interact with Advair Diskus?

Other drugs that interact with this medicine are anti-HIV medication named Norvir and Kaletra, disease like tuberculosis, glaucoma, diabetes, skin disorders. If you are taking these drugs at present do not take this medicine. If it is absolutely necessary for you to use Advair, then check with the doctor before commencing your asthma treatment with this medicine. You must also inform him/her about all the medications that you are currently taking.

Certain antifungal medicines like ketoconazole or any drugs like ritonavir, also known as Norvir and lopinavir, or the Kaletra can easily interact with Advair. There are many other drugs that can interact with this medication. Drugs like fluticasone and salmeterol can also interact with Advair, so you need to inform the doctor about all the medicines you are taking including any other prescription medications, over the counter drugs and herbal products so as to avert any possible drug interactions.
