Product Description

Cafergot is a combination medication of caffeine and ergotamine which are also its generic names. Each medication consists of 1 mg of ergotamine tablets, USP and 100 mg caffeine, USP.

Cafergot has a few inactive ingredients like calcium carbonate, magnesium stearate, compressible sugar, microcrystalline cellulose, propylparaben, acacia, sucrose synthetic iron oxide, sodium benzoate, sucrose, corn starch, povidone, sodium starch glycolate, titanium dioxide and other constituents.

Uses

Cafergot is used to treat and prevent certain types of headaches like migraine, migraine variants, vascular and cluster headaches. It is also used in the treatment of various other medical conditions apart from curing migraine headaches.

As pain is generally caused due to the widening of blood vessels, ergotamine in Cafergot acts to narrow these widened blood vessels and caffeine works the same way as ergotamine along with increasing its absorption.

Important safety information

Avoid eating grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice or consuming alcohol while on Cafergot as it might evoke unfavorable reactions.

One should refrain from using Cafergot if you have been diagnosed with heart problems, liver and kidney damage, high blood pressure, blood vessel problems etc.

Do not use Cafergot if you are allergic to any other medication or with the ingredients of this medication.

Cafergot may interact with over the counter drugs, antibiotics, herbal or natural supplements or any other prescription medications. So notify your doctor before beginning a course of treatment with the medication.

Misuse or overdose of Cafergot can cause undesirable health complications.

Pregnant women and breastfeeding ladies are forbidden to take Cafergot as it can cause unfavorable issues in the developing or new born child.

Dosage

Cafergot tablets can be taken by mouth with or without food usually two medications at the onset of headache followed by one medication every half an hour till the headache is subsided. One should not take more than six tablets per headache attack or ten tablets in a week’s period.

Take Cafergot exactly as prescribed by the physician. Your doctor might insist you to continue taking the medicines for about two to three weeks as a short term treatment plan for cluster headaches.

Cafergot works its best when it is taken at the first signs of headache, waiting until the pain gets worsened might not work for the medication. One should not take two doses of the medication at one instant.

Side Effects

Common allergic reactions of Cafergot include restlessness, nausea, vomiting, sleeping problems, stomach ache or dizziness. If you encounter serious distress in the body like numbness or tingling in the fingers or toes, abdominal pain, lower back pain, muscle pain, heartbeats that are irregular or decrease urine quantity, inform your health care professional about the same immediately.
