Colchicine is extracted from plants of the genus Colchicum and is a natural product. The anti-inflammatory drug is the generic formulation of Colcrys. It has a biological half-life of 26 to 31 hours.

Colchicine works by decreasing the development of crystals that causes pain to the patients. It is to be remembered that this pill only helps in preventing the formation of crystals and does not give relief to pain. So take the pain relieving medications that is prescribed by the doctor.

You should always keep this medication out of reach of children as if this pill is accidently administered or if someone takes it, the resulting consequence can be extremely fatal.

With this medication muscular and nervous side effects are more common in the older people and as well as children as they are easily susceptible to infections or injuries.

There are traces of this medication found in breast milk, so do not breastfeed your baby while taking Colchicine.

Dosage and Administration

Usually, the prescribed dosage would be 1.2 milligrams, followed by 0.6 milligrams the next hour. The maximum dosage strength that would be prescribed is 1.8 milligrams. This dosage strength varies from one patient to another.

Colchicine can be taken by mouth with or without food. Follow the advice of the doctor throughout the course of therapy. The drug is effective when taken after experiencing the first gout attack. So get instructions from the physician and get treated for this condition.

To decrease the risk of ill effects, do not increase or decrease the dose, stop the medication or take more Colchicine pills. If the patient forgets to take a pill, it can be taken as soon as they remember. When it conflicts with the schedule of the next dose, it is very important to avoid taking the missed dose.

Side effects

Nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, diarrhea, numbness in fingers or toes, weakness, unusual bleeding, fever, sore throat, muscle pain, paleness in lips and signs of infection are some of the common side effects of Colchicine. Certain medical conditions need to be consulted before taking this pill.

Interaction with other drugs

Interactions with other drugs can be avoided if a patient is cautious while taking Colchicine. Amprenavir, Fibrates, Cyclosporine, Azole antifungals, Macrolide antibiotics, Nelfinavir, Telaprevir, Tipranavir, Sympathomimetics, Fosaprepitant, Fosamprenavir, Atazanavir, Darunavir and Diltiazem are a few which should be avoided whilst taking this pill. Individuals should have utmost care while taking this pill. Older patients are very sensitive to the drug, so it is wise to be more cautious during the course of therapy.
