The double World Cup winner is now a commercial helicopter pilot and flew rescue and reconnaissance mission to Kaikoura, a town on the South Island coast which bore the brunt of the devastation. McCaw was woken in his Christchurch home by the powerful 7.8 quake in the early hours of Monday morning and sprung into action to shuttle rescue workers by chopper to the worst-affected areas.
