Is that you Mrs Bates? On Tuesday morning Joanne Froggatt looked worlds away from the pristine Lady's Maid as she filmed scenes for her latest project, Liar

The Yorkshire-born star was seen emerging into the crisp morning air looking visibly shocked as the cameras rolled.

Clad in a grey sweater, black trousers and a longline stone coat, the Dark Angel star was certainly a far cry from the period roles that have seen her gain global success.

Joanne looked to be filming a harrowing scene, walking slowly down the street in a ponderous fashion with her mouth agape.

A modern role: Seen for the first time on set in Kent, as Laura Newell in the new ITV drama, the actress, 36, was seen looking shocked and dishevelled - a far cry from her time on Downton

With her blonde locks styled into a bedraggled and severely tousled state, it's almost certain her character Laura was in the middle of some drama.

Surrounded by a number of crew members during takes, the actress appeared to be only filming scenes with co-star Zoe Tapper.

Trading her brunette locks for locks for a fiery new colour, the Mr Selfridge actress was nearly unrecognisable.

Liars is a new six part series from ITV that sees Joanne and Ioan Gruffudd leading the cast.

Created and written by BAFTA-nominated producers and screenwriters Harry and Jack Williams, Liar tells the story of a night that changes the lives of Laura Newell (Joanne) and Andrew Ellis (Ioan) forever.

Laura is a smart and dedicated teacher, not long out of a relationship and unsure about getting back on the dating scene.

Andrew is a renowned surgeon whose son is a pupil at Laura’s school, and following an initial encounter the two pursue a romance.

They begin dating, but neither fully realises consequences their meeting will have on each other or their families, as truth and consequences appear hand-in-hand.

The broody and dramatic thriller explores both sides of a relationship, and both sides of the truth.
