'I don't know how they're going to react!' Danny Baker 'hasn't told anyone' about his jungle stint as he prepares to enter camp with Martin Roberts on I'm  A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here!

His brash, outspoken demeanour is set to ruffle feathers in an otherwise division free camp following a late introduction to the current series of I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!

But as Danny Baker prepares for his first night beneath the stars he admits he’s more concerned about the general reaction from his nearest and dearest after keeping his appearance on the long-running show a closely guarded secret.

‘I haven’t told anybody, but I don’t know how they are going to react when I’m not around,’ he revealed. ‘I have got several big projects on and it’s not going to be helpful I am disappearing!’

Incoming: Danny Baker and Martin Roberts are late introductions to the current series of I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!

The married 59-year old agreed to take part on the latest series while juggling a range of projects, amongst them a tour, his third book and a new series of BBC show Cradle To The Grave.

But while he admits his desire to appear in front of the camera has been exhausted after more than four decades in the business, he couldn’t resist the inevitable challenges that come with spending three weeks in the Australian jungle - and with good reason.

He added: ‘Next summer, I am even thinking about moving to America. So when this came around, rather than disappearing quietly, I thought “Why not do one last big television programme?” And why wouldn’t you do this show? It’s great.’

Surprise: As Danny  prepares for his first night beneath the stars he admits he’s more concerned about the general reaction from his nearest and dearest after keeping his appearance on the long-running show a closely guarded secret

The entertainer admits his veteran status has given him an 'exhaustive' collection of showbiz anecdotes and more than 311 show tunes that may well rile his camp-mates.

'I am annoyingly ebullient and I am not a person to show the "real me" or anything as dreary as that,' he said. 'I think I will be good for morale.'

Baker's appearance comes little more than a month after he revealed he'd won his battle with throat cancer - six years after being told it could kill him.

Suited and booted: But Danny and Martin will change their smart attire for standard jungle overalls

The sobering experience has toughened his resolve, and he admits he has no fears about imminent Bushtucker Trials after battling a life threatening illness.

'There is no comparison (with doing this) at all,' he said. 'I had no life lessons (after cancer), I beat it.'

Baker joins the jungle with fellow presenter Martin Roberts, 53, best known for his role on popular daytime show Homes Under The Hammer.

But while his fellow contestant has no fear, Roberts admits to being nervous about the possibility of being confronted with creepy crawlies.

Fit and healthy: Baker's appearance comes little more than a month after he revealed he'd won his battle with throat cancer - six years after being told it could kill him

'The Bushtucker Trials are freaking me out,' he said. 'I keep waking up in the middle of the night thinking about it. Last night I had to turn the lights on!

'I was imagining being locked in and I was having a full on nightmare. Rats and scorpions being poured over your head is not my idea of a nice Sunday. But I think it's too late to do anything about it.'

The presenter admits his main goal is to make his two children proud - and he's already anticipating their reaction when they see him tuck into one of the jungle's more dubious delicacies.

Little white lie: Baker's imminent appearance comes just one week after he dismissed claims that he had agreed to feature on the show, branding them 'preposterous'

'My kids are going to absolutely wet themselves when they see me eating kangaroo testicles,' he said. 'They will be beside themselves and they will go completely bonkers doing it - they don't know yet!'

While his jungle experience is yet to begin, Roberts is already looking ahead to the possibility of being crowned King of the Jungle.

'If that doesn't make you feel good about yourself, I don't know what would!' he admitted. 'Yes, it is going to be tough but what an amazing detox too - it's going to be great fun.'

Main man: Roberts is best known for his hosting role on popular daytime renovation show Homes Under The Hammer, as well as Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is and travel programme Wish You Were Here…?
