Janelle Monae shines next to acting veterans Taraji P. Henson and Octavia Spencer in new Hidden Figures trailer

Janelle Monáe held her own with Hollywood veterans Taraji P. Henson and Octavia Spencer in a new trailer released on Wednesday for Hidden Figures.

The 30-year-old singer turned actress stars alongside Oscar nominee Henson, 46, and Oscar winner Spencer, 46, in the upcoming 1960s biopic.

Monáe portrays aerospace engineer Mary Jackson who along with fellow mathematician Dorothy Vaughan [played by Spencer] and space scientist Katherine Johnson [played by Henson] worked on NASA's first human spaceflight program.

The film's original release date of January 13, 2017 also was moved up with a limited release on December 25 followed by a wide release on January 6.

The trailer opened with Mary, Dorothy and Katherine stranded on the side of the road as a police car approached with siren on.

A white police officer asked Katherine if they had identification and she produced her NASA badge.

'NASA! I had no idea they hired...,' the state patrolman said shaking his head and looking up at Mary.

'There are quite a few women working in the space program,' interjected Dorothy.

The officer then gave the ladies an escort.

'Three Negro women are chasing a white police officer down the highway in 1961. That is a God-ordained miracle,' Mary said while driving behind the officer.

Kevin Costner was then seen as Al Harrison, director of NASA's Space Task Group, talking of the program's goal to launch a human into space.

Kirsten Dunst as an administrator told Dorothy that Space Task Group 'needs a computer'.

'Katherine is the gal for that,' Dorothy responded as math wiz Katherine was seen working on calculations.

Jim Parsons was then seen as fictional NASA engineer Paul Stafford who seemed skeptical of Katherine's abilities and hostile toward her.

Katherine after being shut out of a meeting confronted Paul who informed her there was no protocol for women attending.

'There's no protocol for a man circling the Earth either, sir,' Katherine responded.

Mary also grew frustrated with the gender and racial hurdles placed before them.

'Every time we have a chance to move ahead, they move the finish line. Every time,' Mary said.

As more than a dozen black women stood in a hallway, Al knocked down a Colored Ladies Room sign as a white officer and colleagues watched from the other side.

'We all get there together, or we don't get there at all,' Al said.

The ladies were also shown meeting astronaut John Glenn, portayed by 28-year-old Glen Powell.

The movie depicts the historic 1962 Project Mercury flight in which he became the first US astronaut to orbit the Eath.

Katherine was called to communicate with the astronaut after a warning light went off inside Friendship 7 during his descent and he warned that things were 'heating up'.

Hidden Figures is directed by Theodore Melfi and based on the book by Margot Lee Shetterly.

The film features original music by Pharrell Williams who also is a producer of the movie.

Monáe's prior film credits include a voice role in the 2014 movie Rio 2 and a starring role in the drama Moonlight released last month.

The psychedelic soul singer has six Grammy Awards to her credit. 

Spencer has dozens of film credits and won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in 2011's The Help.

Henson was nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her work in 2008's The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button and also has numerous TV and film credits including the hit Fox show Empire.
