The judge set another hearing for December 1, when the case could be settled.

Manziel must be in court for that hearing, the judge said.

The former Cleveland Browns quarterback, who has hit the headlines in recent months for his out-of-control behavior, left the Dallas courtroom without responding to questions.

The 23-year-old is accused of hitting and threatening former girlfriend Colleen Crowley during a night out in January.

The former star at Texas A&M faces a misdemeanor assault charge that carries a penalty of up to a year in jail and a $4,000 fine.

The hearing came as Todda Jones, one of the NFL's two chief disciplinary officers, told ESPN that if Manziel is signed, he will immediately be hit with a six-game suspension.

Manziel played two seasons for the Aggies and was the first freshman to win the Heisman Trophy in 2012.

'Johnny Football' turned pro after his redshirt sophomore season but had two disappointing seasons after the Browns drafted him in the first round in 2014.

Cleveland released him in March.

With his NFL career derailed by his party-loving lifestyle and legal troubles, Manziel re-enrolled at Texas A&M in September.

It came after he vowed to go sober in June and make an NFL comeback.

But in the months since he became a free agent, Manziel has regularly been spotted partying from Hollywood to Las Vegas to New York.
