Buckingham Palace will undergo a £369million refit starting next April to replace pipes, boilers and wiring and prevent 'potentially catastrophic building failure' in the future. It had been thought the Queen may have to move out temporarily but a 10-year phased option will see the palace remain open and the monarch in residence throughout the works, funded by a rise in the amount of public money she receives. The monarch will receive an extra 10 per cent of the profits made by the Crown Estate - a vast property portfolio formerly owned by the Royal Family until it was handed over to Parliament more than 300 years ago. The project will see ten miles of water pipes, 6,500 plug sockets, 500 pieces of sanitary ware such as toilets and basins and 20 miles of skirting board replaced after experts warned there was 'serious risk' of fire and water damage to the palace and the priceless works of art it contains.

Brexit plans could be blocked by Scottish and Welsh governments

Supreme Court justices accepted Nicola Sturgeon's application to have her government's voice represented in the landmark court case next month, which threatens to derail the PM's Brexit plans. Counsel for the Scottish Government will now be able to address the court on the relevance of points of Scottish law, so far as they do not form part of the law of England and Wales.

UK weather warnings are issued as wintry storms sweep across the UK

Commuters have faced chaos on the roads today as wintry storms swept across towns and cities overnight, causing a deluge of ice, hail, sleet and snow. The Met Office and the Environment Agency have issued a number of flood and ice warnings and are urging caution as temperatures overnight are set to plummet to a freezing -6C in some areas, including Scotland. Heavy snow fell over Greater Manchester, Devon, Cornwall and west Wales where temperatures fell to zero degrees, sparking havoc for rush hour traffic - worsened by heavy showers leading to icy, slushy conditions on the roads. The extreme weather is set to continue into the weekend. Drivers struggled to get to work and school in Yorkshire and Lancashire this morning (pictured) after a thick blanket of snow covered the roads and as temperatures dipped to as low as -7.2C in some places, the driver of a road gritting lorry was taken to hospital after it slid off the road in Shropshire.

The teenager, who cannot be named, died last month and is now in a 'cryostat' tank at around -196C (-321F) inside the Michigan-based Cryonics Institute, it can be reported for the first time today. She was at the centre of a fierce legal battle between her divorced parents - with her mother agreeing to her wish to be frozen while her estranged father refused because of its £37,000 cost and the brutal process of preserving her. He told the High Court: 'Even if the treatment is successful and she is brought back to life in, let's say, 200 years, she may not find any relative and she might not remember things. She may be left in a desperate situation - given that she is still only 14-years-old - and will be in the United States of America.' Mr Justice Peter Jackson was called a 'hero' by the child before she died after he agreed to her dying wish so that one day she could 'be cured and woken up'. Her body has been flown to America and she has since slowly been chilled over two to three weeks in Liquid Nitrogen and stored next to around 150 other bodies.

Alaska moose lock antlers during a fight - then freeze together in a slough

Social studies and science teacher Brad Webster spotted the moose earlier this month while giving a friend a tour of the area in Unalakleet. The two men were walking on the frozen surface when they spotted two pairs of antlers (inset, bottom right) poking out from the ice - and realized there were two full animals underneath. The two moose (pictured) likely got stuck together clashing their antlers, entangling them to the point of not being able to dislodge, before falling into the water together and drowning, according to a biology and wildlife specialist. Webster, who went to retrieve the moose heads with some of his friends, said one of the moose appeared to have pierced the other's skull.
