January 8, 2015 -- The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) today announced the launch of its Certified Electrical Safety Worker (CESW) certification program, which is based on the 2015 edition of NFPA 70E, Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace®. The program works to ensure that electricians have the knowledge, training and experience to perform their jobs at the highest, safest level possible.
“NFPA’s CESW certification program is an important credential for documenting electricians’ advanced knowledge of electrical safety,” said Jim Pauley, NFPA president. “It also serves as a powerful tool for organizations that require the certification, demonstrating their vested interest in meeting the electrical safety standards contained in NFPA 70E.”
The CESW certification program was developed in coordination with a wide range of subject matter experts (SMEs) in the electrical safety field, including construction, industrial, residential electricians and contractors; electrical engineers; electrical safety training organizations; and facilities managers and supervisors.
“As NFPA developed the CESW certification program, we made it a priority to work collaboratively with other leaders in the industry,” said Leon Katcharian, NFPA’s director of certification. “Incorporating their expertise ensures that the certification is as relevant and impactful as possible.”

The certification features an extensive, 100-item examination, along with a set of recertification requirements that must be completed within a three-year time period following initial certification. During the examination, candidates are assessed on four main subject areas: understanding electrical safety-related work practices; establishing electrically safe work conditions; identifying precautionary techniques for work involving electrical hazards; and performing electrical hazard risk assessments.
