Members of the local community claimed they stopped the man in the act of trying to force himself on the five-year-old girl and began to chase him down the street before he sought refuge in a house.

Eyewitness Jose Mendez said: 'He tried to rape her and rob her, then he ran away and hid in a house, people came, they wanted to lynch him.'

The angry mob grew larger and larger when they heard what had apparently happened, but before they managed to catch him, the accused hid in a house where the gate had been left open and locked the door.

The mob crowded around the building and angrily shouted at him to get out of the property.

It took 100 armed police officers to control the crowd and get the man out of the house to save him from being lynched by the mob.
