Altered Innocence has picked up U.S. rights to Yony Leyser’s “Desire Will Set You Free,” which received its world premiere at the Montreal World Film Festival and also played at Outfest La. It will receive a release in February.

The deal was negotiated between Frank Jaffe from Altered Innocence, and Wavelength Pictures’ John Flahive. Jaffe commented: “It’s not every day that you come across a movie as honest at capturing the queer radical nature of Berlin, and I think this movie will speak to anyone who feels like an outsider or just loves the city of Berlin.”

According to a statement, the film “takes you deep into the free-spirited, drug-fueled, queer-paradise of contemporary Berlin. Ezra, a struggling American writer, meets Sasha, a Russian immigrant escort, who introduces Ezra to his world of clubs and parties, a dizzying and vibrant hedonistic underground. ‘Lion’ Starring Dev Patel, Nicole Kidman & Rooney Mara Glosses Over Its Emotional Topography [Review]

34 minutes ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

The hill across the street. The convenience store a few blocks over that still sells cassettes. The dented mailbox on the corner. The broken streetlight that never works. While where we live is marked by house numbers and street names, what can make us feel at home are the details, the landmarks that won’t necessarily be found on any map, but come from the familiarity of our surroundings from lived in experience. These are just some of the ideas that “Lion” wants to play with, as a true story tale about a young man’s journey to find his way home again.

David Fincher has had a lot of projects he’s flirted with other years, and one of them was an all-cgi adaptation of Frank Miller‘s graphic novel “Hard Boiled.” The film never came to pass, but we can think of no better heir to take up the reins than Ben Wheatley.

Deadline reports that “Free Fire” and “Kill List” director Wheatley is mounting is first major studio project with Warner Bros.

Video Essay Explains Why Marvel Movies Look Kind Of Ugly

1 hour ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

In addition to making some of the most financially-successful blockbusters of all-time, the Marvel Cinematic Universe produces a lot of pretty good films. Arguably a few great ones too. They’re good at what they do. They’ve also made smart choices, both behind-the-camera and in front of it. But they still have two major issues: their indistinctive scores (which was mildly resolved in this month’s “Doctor Strange”) and their bland, often underwhelming color grading, which makes them look like “muddy concrete,” in the words of YouTube’s Patrick Williams (via Collider).

Netflix Releasing ‘Gilmore Girls’ The Day After Thanksgiving is Brilliant… Right?

1 hour ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

For Netflix and fans, this seems like an obvious win-win. By releasing the much-anticipated “Gilmore Girls” revival on the Friday after Thanksgiving, the popular streaming service is making a series beloved by families available when families are getting together. Rather than fight over what to watch  — “There’s a college football game on!” “But what about ‘The Simpsons’ marathon?” “Wait: Is ‘Westworld’ suitable for a 14-year-old?” — just about everyone can agree what takes priority come Friday morning (and literally everyone should be able to enjoy the new episodes.)

But is that all there is to it? A kind gift to fans at a date and time of their convenience? Of course not. Netflix is making a business decision here for a coveted property they paid a pretty penny to produce. Those factors certainly play into it, but that’s not the end of the story.

“That Feeling Inside You That Never Explodes”: Lucile Hadžihalilović on Evolution

2 hours ago | Filmmaker Magazine - Blog | See recent Filmmaker Magazine news »

Lucile Hadžihalilović’s Evolution is her long-awaited sophomore feature; her first, Innocence, premiered in 2004. At the time of Evolution‘s premiere, I wrote: Innocence followed a group of young women being schooled in etiquette, beauty et al. at a vaguely sinister private institution, preparing themselves to be sexualized for a lifetime before an implicit male gaze; Evolution gender-switches the sexual fears attendant to puberty. The setting is, again, an isolated incubation facility, this one for the grooming of young boys. Nicolas (Max Brebant) is one of many interchangeable blond youths (the vibe is very Village of the Damned) being raised by an equally interchangeable group of orange-haired mothers (?) in […] »

Kevin Smith Suggests Tim Miller As The New Director Of ‘The Flash’

2 hours ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

With “Deadpool 2” officially locking down David Leitch to helm the sequel, the superhero movie of the moment with a job vacancy is “The Flash.” The film recently lost director Rick Famiyuwa marking the second high profile departure this year from the movie, with Seth Grahame-Smith also leaving in 2016. It’s been nearly a month since this all went down, and surprisingly, if there’s a shortlist of replacements, it hasn’t leaked yet to the trades.

‘The Comedian’ Trailer: Robert De Niro Charms Leslie Mann While Insulting Everybody Else

2 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Can Robert De Niro pull off a stand-up comic? Academy Award-winning director Taylor Hackford (“Ray,” “An Officer and a Gentleman”) seems to think so. In his latest film, De Niro plays celebrity comic Jackie Burke, a hot-tempered stand-up who’s sentenced to 100 hours of community service after punching an audience member. There, he meets Harmony (Leslie Mann), an unlikely love interest and the daughter of one of his contemporaries, played by Harvey Keitel. The rest of the cast includes Danny DeVito, Cloris Leachman, Edie Falco and Charles Grodin.

Filmmaker Toolkit Podcast: How Drunk Astrophysicists Inspired ‘Arrival’ Scribe Eric Heisserer to Become a Screenwriter (Episode 14)

Eric Heisserer was first inspired to start screenwriting after an experience he had doing graphic design work for nuclear scientists and astrophysicists. “They were designing technology for the astronauts to use on spacewalks and repair the shuttle and I was the young and sparkly graphic designer trying my best to make them look good on the page,” Heisserer recently explained, when he was on IndieWire’s Filmmaker Toolkit Podcast.

Not even 21 years old, Heisserer would go out to celebrate when the team got a proposal accepted. While he was sipping on ginger ale, the boozy scientists would tell stories.

“After a couple of hours a completely wasted group of astrophysicists are the most entertaining ever,” said Heisserer. “They would walk through any number of apocalyptic scenarios and how they would solve them. These included zombies. Some would »

Where Does the ‘Fantastic Beasts’ Franchise Go From Here? — IndieWire Critics Survey

2 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of film and TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday morning. (The answer to the second, “What is the best film in theaters right now?”, can be found at the end of this post.)

This week’s question:

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” just enjoyed $75 million opening weekend, and has been announced as the first installment of a five-part series. How would you like to see these movies continue to expand the Harry Potter universe?

Tasha Robinson (@tasharobinson), The Verge

Mostly, I want to see the series continue to grow up, and I don’t expect that it will, because the tension between making the series more mature and keeping it accessible for kid viewers is probably going to keep us in this weird in-between space, where even adult characters operating in a politically complicated world have to »

Legendary Entertainment Obtains The Spice & Remake Rights To ‘Dune’

Frank Herbert‘s sci-fi classic “Dune” has yet to be given the cinematic treatment worthy of its legendary status. You can put as much revisionist paint on David Lynch‘s troubled 1984 production, but it’s not a good movie by any stretch, and even if Alejandro Jodorowsky had been given free reign to do what he wanted in the 1970s (as detailed in the excellent documentary “Jodorowsky’s Dune“) let’s be real, it would’ve been a fascinating curiosity, but probably not a great film.

‘When We Rise’ Trailer: Gus Van Sant and Dustin Lance Black Reunite for Lgbtq Miniseries Starring Guy Pearce

3 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Gus Van Sant’s last few movies haven’t been met with especially warm receptions: “Sea of Trees” was perhaps the most derided film to premiere at Cannes last year, and neither “Promised Land” nor “Restless” fared especially well either. For his next effort, he’s moving to the small screen with “When We Rise,” a docudrama miniseries coming to ABC next year. Watch its first trailer below.

Van Sant will direct the first two hours of the seven-part series, with Dee Rees, Thomas Schlamme and Dustin Lance Black (who also wrote and created) also onboard as directors. “When We Rise” begins in 1971, just two years after the Stonewall riots — whose most recent cinematic depiction came courtesy of Roland Emmerich and wasn’t any more well received than “Sea of Trees” — and continues from there. »

The Cinema of Seeing

4 hours ago | MUBI | See recent MUBI news »

It is said that stars do not need scripts or mere stories to thoroughly inhabit a motion picture. Histories without language, or even thought, quiver behind their eyes. Their presence—ineffable, diaphanous, seductive—provides the audience a beacon to follow a prefabricated narrative to its only meaningful conclusion. Outside the realm of this splendid cosmology, movies that rely on actors and 'acting,' the common tools of theater, tend to miss the mark when these metaphysics come into play. There are eyes that photograph as soulful, as opposed to merely expressive—allowing the onlooker a glimpse into the funnel end of eternity. Think Robert Mitchum and Humphrey Bogart, whose eyes invite inquiry into the unwritten histories behind them. If the eyes are the windows of the soul, great movie stars are constantly defenestrating their spirit essence right down the lens. Joan Crawford could scrub bathtubs by merely gazing at them. »
