  • The incredible creature was filmed at the bottom of the ocean in the Maldives
  • It camouflaged and contorted itself along the ocean floor
  • The footage was taken by Turkish diver Enda Kesim
  • He said: 'It truly was one of my favourite moments in all my years of diving'

If you struggle to spot anything unusual in the coral, you are not alone.

This colour-changing octopus is a master of disguise, and when it doesn't want to be seen it blends perfectly into the background.

The shapeshifter dazzled divers with a mesmerising show as it camouflaged and contorted itself along the ocean floor.

Can you spot it? Somewhere in this picture is an octopus, but it is a master of disguise

The cephalopod was caught on camera by Enda Kesim at the Ari Atoll in the Maldives.

At first, the octopus is barely visible as it lurks among the coral but as Enda approaches the clever creature reveals itself and proceeds to glide along the ocean floor.

After interchanging between its natural brown complexion and the deep-sea green of its surroundings several times, the animal then stretches over a reef, assuming its complexion to an unbelievable detail and virtually disappearing in the blink of an eye.

It is there, but it's very hard to spot as the octopus is adept at disguising itself

Enda, an experienced diver from Istanbul, Turkey, said: 'I've been diving for 10 years and I have never seen anything like this before.

'Being able to watch an octopus perform such a show was just amazing.

'It was like it was playing a game with me, saying "look at me" and "look what I can do".

'Octopuses are usually quite difficult to find, because usually they hide themselves away in rock holes.

'But this one was so out in the open and engaging.

'I did leave him alone after a while, as I didn't want him to squirt ink on me and ruin the moment.

HOW DO OCTOPUSES CHANGE COLOUR?

Octopuses are able to change the colour of their skin thanks to cells below the centre of their skin, called chromatophores.

These contain an elastic sac full of pigment, rather like a tiny balloon, which can be a variety of colours.

The sac is controlled by an array of nerves and muscles, which control whether it is expanded or contracted. This dictates how bright the colour of the skin appears to be.
