A mother has slammed a hair salon for giving her 'the trailer trash look' after she paid $200 and waited for five hours for a hairstyle she didn't want.

Nina Mather, a social worker, took to social media on Monday to complain about a trip to the hair salon that she said went horribly wrong.

Ms Mather said she told a hairdresser at a western Sydney salon she wanted a balayage dye technique applied to her hair, which means her hair gradually becomes blonde at the end like it has been bleached by the sun.

But when she realised the hairdresser's work didn't look like the image she had asked for, and her hair was now brittle and starting to break, Ms Mather said she became upset and refused to pay the $200 bill.

An image posted on Facebook shows a distinct blonde dye line around in a circle around the crown of her head.

'I asked for balayage and showed them a photo, then expected to walk out with the finished result,' she wrote on Facebook.

'I complained and said I wouldn't pay, so they tried to fix it with more bleach until I was so upset they called security and the cops.'

Ms Mather said she was so embarrassed by the hairstyle she wore a beanie (pictured) to work on Tuesday

Ms Mather said at this point she was 'extremely upset' but the security officers and police were 'very nice and tried to compromise with the owner and manager'.

The salon said they would remove $60 from the price but Ms Mather continued to refuse to pay the remaining $200 tally.

She said police told her she legally had to pay the bill but could file for a refund to NSW Fair Trading.

'Love the trailer trash look! $200 bucks worth of bottle bleach!' she said on Facebook.

'Worst customer service doesn't even begin. R.I.P my awesome hair.'

But when she realised the hairdresser's work (pictured) didn't look like the image she had asked for, Ms Mather said she became upset and refused to pay the $260 bill - but was forced to pay $200

By the time she was finished speaking with police, Ms Mather said she had been at the salon for five hours.

'I have had a consultation with another hairdresser and have been told that my hair needs extensive repair work. The first step of treatment begins tomorrow,' she said.

Ms Mather said she was so embarrassed by the ordeal her son offered her his colourful Jamaican beanie to wear to work on Tuesday.

'I was so distressed yesterday, and even this morning, having to display my horrible hair at work. I was crying and my 10-year-old son gave me his favourite Jamaican beanie to make me feel better,' she said.
