Let down your long hair! As Rapunzel-like hairstyles ruled the 2016 AMAs red carpet, FEMAIL details how YOU can achieve great lengths at home

  • At last night's American Music Awards, stars like Ariana Grande, 23, and Chrissy Teigen, 30, opted for super long, sleek hairstyles
  • Taraji P. Henson's ponytail measured 36 inches
  • Learn how to achieve similar head-turning looks at home with extensions

After taking in all of the best beauty looks on last night's American Music Awards' red carpet, we're reaching for a jumbo-size bottle of biotin.

Ariana Grande's signature ponytail extended well past her waist, and Karlie Kloss channeled I Dream of Jeannie with her slicked-back look. To perform her single Million Reasons, Lady Gaga removed the white, wide brim hat she wore on the red carpet and allowed her long, blonde hair to flow freely. Chrissy Teigen and Julianne Hough kept it simple and sleek with center-parted, stomach-grazing styles.

Taking the cake, however, was Taraji P. Henson. The Empire star's hairstylist Tym Wallace revealed on Instagram that her textured ponytail measured an impressive 36 inches.

The good news for us mere mortals is that all of these looks were created using some form of extensions. And even better news? You don't need a glam squad to achieve mermaid-level hair at home. Below, two experts share their tips.

Long hair DO care: Long hair - seen on stars like Taraji P. Henson (above), 46, was the biggest beauty trend at the American Music Awards last night in Los Angeles

Show pony(s): Ariana Grande (left), 23, and Karlie Kloss (right), 24, both wore their hair pulled back into I Dream of Jeannie-like styles

How to Shop for Extensions

SHOP CLIP-IN HAIR EXTENSIONS FOR EVERY BUDGET

RPZL In An Instant Clip-In Extensions ($250-$350, rpzl.com

'I always recommend to start with clip-in extensions - they are so easy to use and everyone should have a pair,' Kristina Barricelli, Hairdo brand ambassador and owner of Gemini 14 Salon in New York City, told FEMAIL.

Lisa Richards, co-founder of RPZL, a hair extension and blow-out bar in NYC, added that it's important to match the color of extensions to the color of your ends. 'This is the part you are extending, not the root.'

How to Prep Extensions

'All clip-in hair extensions have an ultra-glossy finish to them when they first arrive. While that may be awesome to look at, it’s a dead giveaway when clipped into natural hair,' Lisa said.

When prepping Taraji's extensions, for example, her hairstylist washed both her natural hair and the pieces with SheaMoisture Argan Oil & Almond Milk Smooth and Tame Shampoo and Conditioner. He then let the extensions air dry ('to bring out the natural texture') while blow drying her natural hair smooth.

Million reasons not to cut your hair: Lady Gaga, 30, wore a white wide brim hat to the ceremony, but removed it for her performance, revealing long blonde hair

Center of attention: Julianne Hough, 28, and Chrissy Teigen, 30, used extensions to boost the length of their sleek styles

How to Apply and Style Extensions

'Trying to use larger extensions to cover more ground faster is a mistake as it will look fake,' said Lisa. Instead, focus on smaller sections only where you feel you don't have enough hair.

Kristina advises teasing the line where you will be clipping in the extensions before application 'for added grip'. When clipping in, 'make sure to secure the clip-in taught, straight and flat to the head so there are no bumps,' she said.

When using a hot tool to curl or straighten, pass it through sections that contain both your natural hair and the the extension, and to help camouflage clips, Lisa likes using a teasing comb to create volume and layers.
